We can communicate just as thoroughly and rapidly with our eyes as we can with our mouths.

Oculese (visual; motions):  Introduction

Beyond blinking Morse code, this language is made up of sequences of eye aiming; the directions the pupil points to in certain orders spell out different words and concepts.

Blinking:

Inisfreeans, like anyone, can blink in Morse code.  This is very easy to detect, however, so they do not use this form of communicating when others are around/looking.  Instead, they make sure they are blinking in a way that whoever is watching would expect –and dismiss as normal/negligible.

Pupil Dilation:

Unlike most animals, Inisfreeans can change how dilated or contracted their pupils are –at will.  Furthermore, it will not affect their vision if more or less light than normal is getting into their eyes; this is because their vision is based on dozens of forms of visual detection, and because they can create internal/mental visual images/representations based on what they hear, similarly to how bats and dolphins use echo-location.

Pupil dilation takes a second or two (per contraction/dilation), so this is seldom used beyond just for emphasizing certain parts of what one is ‘saying’ (or, in this case, what one is using her eyes to communicate/spell).  For that same reason, pupil dilation is also not the basis of any of our Inisfreean forms of communication; it just takes too long –at least for our tastes/standards.  It is also not the basis of Oculese; using contraction/dilation as opposed to beeps/taps in/for Morse code would be impractical, slow, and tiresome.

Only when an Inisfreean is facing you directly, both your eyes aimed at the other’s, and an uninterrupted eye-lock/ing is possible, will she use this optional subset/component of Oculese to enhance her Oculese messages to you.  Even then, she will never expect or ask you to do the same, as few other than Inisfreeans have this high level of control over such a universally-involuntary muscle/part of most being’s bodies.  All you have to do is blink, hand-sign, speak, kegel, or think back, and she’ll notice and understand.

Eye Aiming/Pointing:

The direction an Inisfreean points her eyes does not indicate what she is thinking about, as is often the case with humans –at least humans who don’t know about this science, and haven’t been trained in how to ‘beat’ it.  Inisfreeans look at things they want to draw your attention to, or things they are studying visually, and have not just expert –but flawless– self-control, meaning if you tell them to keep their eyes forward / straight ahead, they will –no matter what you may do to them.  When communicating in/via Oculese, they more often than not keep their eyes pointed directly at yours, unless they are conversing in Oculese with more than one person standing nearby at the same time; in those cases, the Inisfreean ‘speaking’ will point her eyes in the direction of the person each part of her sentence is meant for.

Looking up for a second/moment can signal that the Inisfreean looking up intends for you to ‘hear’/insert/interpret that moment/part of her sentence as having the word “up” in it, for example.  Extrapolate this for “down”, “left”, “around”, etc.  You see what we’re trying to say.  (Did you see what I did there? –and here?)

Changing Colors:

Every human is born with an eye color they almost always have to live with –excepting when/if they put in colored contact-lenses.  Inisfreeans are the opposite; they are ‘born’ with the ability to change their eye-color at any time, typically at will (though this also occurs to/for them during heightened emotions, such as when they orgasm or sense their ‘sisters’ (fellow ICVs) are orgasming).  They even set their eye color to match their hair color during sports, as they are nudists, thus they don’t have color-coded uniforms or other indicators to set them apart on the playing field/s.

Like the best LEDs, Inisfreean eyes have irises that are precise enough to shift to, and hold/set, any of the known colors –and this includes many colors not even visible to the naked human eye.  Inisfreeans can choose from so many eye-colors, in fact, that it wouldn’t be a stretch for them to consider humans, at least by comparison to them, color-blind.  Think of all the colors you know the names of… then multiply that by, give or take, one thousand; that gives you an idea of how wide the array of colors is that Inisfreeans can change their eyes to.

Oculese is predominantly based on which colors correspond to which letters, numbers, and words.  Inisfreeans, of course, are capable of using combinations and sequences of blinks, colors, brightnesses, and so on, where they may choose to use blinking to indicate individual letters, brightness/flashes for emphasis, and colors for multiple/additional meanings –or even just distractions for those attempting to figure out what is being ‘said’.  The colors are usually what Inisfreeans choose for conveying the most during Oculese conversations, though, so try paying attention to that first… and see if you can figure out the kind of message/s they are sending.

Brightening/Dimming the Iris:

Inisfreeans can not only change the color of their eyes, but also how bright those colors are.  During moments of intense emotions, such as in the buildup to an orgasm, as well as throughout the orgasms themselves, or even while experiencing a really wonderful hug/reunion, their eyes will visibly brighten, if not flash as if two little internal lightning bolts went off.  When they want to be more expressive, or just get someone’s attention across a room/club, they can do this on command; voluntarily; at will.

Eye-flashing like that is easier for them than dilating and contracting their pupils, and they can trigger these eye/iris flashes rapidly enough to use them for Morse code in a timely manner.  It can be a little disorienting for humans and similar beings, though, so they never do it when driving or flying is required; they don’t want to give someone temporary blindness.  You’ll often see it when they are free to communicate visually and colorfully in/across sports stadiums, such as the Flower Towers, though.

Example Sentence:

If an Inisfreean wants to use Oculese to say the following sentence, it will be converted from English to what is on the lower bullet-note line.

  • English (spoken):  “I want you to fuck me… now.”
  • Oculese:  [iris-color changing to indigo could be used to indicate the letter “I”, with a brightening of the irises capitalizing it], [“want” could be communicated by relaxing/opening/dilating the pupils while the irises remain colored indigo, thereby indicating that “want” is applied to “I” (her)], [“you” could be spelled out, letter by letter, by blinking it in Morse code], [“to” could be blinked, as well], [“fuck” could be blinked], [“me” could be blinked”], and [“now” could be blinked, with both a flash and color-change of the irises italicizing/emphasizing it in a way other than to capitalize part of it]

Again, there are many ways that Oculese can be ‘spoken’/used; the blinking doesn’t have to correspond to the dots and dashes of Morse code, and the brightening of the irises doesn’t have to be the way the Inisfreean emphasizes a word or letter.  Between Inisfreeans, for example, the angle/degree to/at which the eyes of a fellow Inisfreean are pointing, relative straight-forward from that Inisfreean’s face, can be set to correspond to letters, numbers, and other symbols –in any language.  Like the omniglot-based spoken/written language called Inisfreean, Oculese can also switch from language/vocabulary to language/vocabulary, word by word; it has many ways/options.
