Introduction:

SCUBA is an acronym for Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, and it is here in SCUBA City where guests and Inisfreeans alike are trained in the wearing and use of the best SCUBA devices and accessories.

(Inisfreeans (ICVs) never need to breathe, thus never need SCUBA -or any- dive gear, but they like to blend in and dress like their teammates/guests, plus it makes sense for them to carry down spares of oxygen tanks and everything else –just in case; for those non-invincible people.)

Dimensions & Layout:

This facility is divided into four equal sections, each 1,320′ along any of its sides, giving each of these four water-filled chambers 2,299,968,000 cubic feet of space, with 1,742,400 square feet of floor-space at their bottom levels.  That means that 26,136 Olympic swimming pools could fit in each of these four sections.  All together, this facility holds more than 68,999,040,000 gallons of crystal-clear, constantly cleaned water.

Skyscrapers, completely submerged, have their foundations at the bottom levels of the four sections of this facility.  Along that underwater floor, as well as protruding at various places from the walls of each of these four chambers, are office-sized buildings and house-sized buildings, creating the appearance of a submerged game of cavern-sized Tetris.

The ceilings of each of this facility’s four sections is transparent, allowing swimmers and divers here to see up and out whenever they aren’t maneuvering through one of the submerged buildings, and there is 20′ of vertical space between each chamber’s water level and the clear, hard surface of these ceilings.  In almost every submerged building, there are also various types of water-proof light fixtures, many of which can be manually turned on and off.

Lastly, classrooms and locker rooms with all of the equipment to train in this facility are located on ground level; at the top of this facility, which extends straight down 132 stories into Inisfree’s local terrain.

Pressure:

For calculations/estimates, use:

By altitude/depth:

  • surface (ground-level in Inisfree; ~9,240′ above ocean-level):  ~10 PSI
  • ocean-level (outside Inisfree):  14.7 PSI
  • 500′ depth (below the lake-surface in Inisfree):  ~220 PSI
  • 1,000′ depth (below the lake-surface in Inisfree):  ~440 PSI
  • 1,500′ depth (below the lake-surface in Inisfree):  ~670 PSI
  • 2,000′ depth (below the lake-surface in Inisfree):  ~890 PSI
  • 2,500′ depth (below the lake-surface in Inisfree):  ~1,110 PSI
  • bottom (2,700′ depth; below the lake-surface in Inisfree):  ~1,200 PSI

Special Features:

Once just stacks of shipping containers in the general shapes (forms) of office buildings, SCUBA City now has not only skyscraper-sized buildings in it, but also ones which are called ‘shape-shifters’; skyscrapers with independently rotating floors, making them appear to twist and morph into many different appearances from spirals to checkerboard-like exteriors.  Navigating through these is part of the advanced underwater training this facility offers (and which is perfect/ideal for preparation before going to underwater civilizations/sites such as R’lyeh; where the architecture is quite gigantic, unfamiliar, organic, and confusing to humans).

Novels Excerpt:

SCUBA City came next, and was just another short walk away from the school and its playground. “Divers train here to investigate underwater ruins,” their hostess said as they walked in, “such as at the Yonaguni site, and the miles-wide roads of the Titans along the ocean floors, not to mention the World Tree spires down there, as well as underwater places on other worlds.” Training in SCUBA City was also prep’ for mermaid-community rescues & clean-ups. Hundreds of divers and dive instructors were in the four abyss-like sections.

This was where Auz and Lucifera would spend another couple of hours; an instructor sat with them and gave an introductory class to basic diving with and without SCUBA gear. A couple more Inisfreeans walked over and helped Lucifera get fitted in her gear, then they helped her practice getting into one of the shallow ends of the nearest of the four dive-tank sections of the facility. Auz jumped right in without gear. One of the women helped Lucifera transformed into a mermaid upon contact with the water; her beautiful colorful tail appeared, and she just smiled, telling Lucifera she could help her breathe underwater if she wanted to try that out between using her gear.

Many stories below them… in the blue-colored depths… the other divers, instructors, mermaids, and a few Kryptonians, among others, could be seen. Some were free-diving. A few were in astronaut suits, not just SCUBA gear. All of them were keeping an eye on each other, careful not to kick anyone with their motions or fins.

There were entire skyscrapers down in those four huge tanks; each of the four even sections of SCUBA City had an underwater grouping of buildings, sky-bridges, normal houses, and ruins. Ocean levels had risen and fallen multiple times over the many years the Earth had existed, and the Inisfreeans had clearly understood this and begun training to respond to it. Building underwater or ‘sunken’ practice realms as part of their own made it clear: they took ocean changes very seriously.

Lucifera was only guided down a few stories underwater; she was kept at an easy, safe, and fun level not requiring any experience or technical proficiency. That would all come with several more diving lessons if she wanted them. After guiding her in and out of a few of the rooms closest to the water’s surface, her group of helpers used hand signals to get her heading back up to the shallow end where she could walk or climb out.

2021 Update:

The other 3 of the 4 sections of this mega-facility are now distinct from the original one; each one focuses on training divers and submariners in the skill sets most-often needed and sought-after when investigating or otherwise working on distinct underwater sites.  Here are the 4 sections/focuses:

  1. human/oid sunken/submerged city ruins; focus on archaeology
  2. Atlantean/active underwater civilizations; focus on establishing communication
  3. R’lyeh-like abandoned/derelict constructs; focus on quarantine and decommissioning/disabling
  4. megalithic unknown/unidentified; focus on identification and preservation

We’ve also added controlled underwater events, such as currents, thermal vents, and volcanism triggering landslides (only for the most advanced, experienced, and protected/shielded divers/submariners, of course, so don’t worry).

Every type of submarine known to mankind is available here, with multiple ‘clones’ 3D-printed years ago, all of them docked along the sides of each of the 4 sections of this facility; no matter which section you are going to, or what type of training you intended to do/focus on in that section, any of the known submarines will be available to you while you are there/here.
(*As of the 2020s, we Inisfreeans have even figured out how to perfectly 3D-print all of them underwater; no more dry-dock needed.)
