Note from the Editor:

I remember it clear as day, as if it just happened yesterday…  I was out on another mission and patrol, this time manning a turret with a machinegun and an anti-tank missile system.  It was dark out; the middle of the night where we were, but still amazingly hot.  I was tired and sweaty, like we were on so many missions.  I’d eaten well, though, and had plenty of water; I would be alright.

Tired though we all were, we still had a job to do, and I dutifully manned my weapons and optics, scanning our vehicle’s sector of fire, peering out into the poorly-lit Iraqi city, looking for any signs of trouble.  I heard the faint reporting on our field radio bolted into the cab below, just in front of my booted feet.  I saw other squads of Marines quietly walking along the streets and sidewalks, some occasionally making it up to a rooftop or two.

Then something caught my eye; through my thermal scope, and with my own two eyes when I moved them away from that heat-displaying device, I saw a human-like figure lean out of one of the sand-colored town doorways near the main street.  It was alarmingly skinny, though, had no traditional ‘man dress’ on, and had a bulbous, sphere-like head.  I was about to whisper down to those sitting in the chains around my feet to radio it in, alerting the Marines around us and back on base, but… the nearest squad walking the streets in my field of view approached that door the figure had leaned out of… and walked in.

I don’t know what I expected; a shriek of terror, then a brief gunfight, …but silence as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened or been found at all… wasn’t it.  The foot-patrol went in and came back out, reporting nothing, and carried on about their way.  Had I hallucinated the skeleton-like figure?  What had I really seen?  I still don’t know.

Strange sightings during the desert nights out there became common.  I never ended up reporting any of them, except to the Lance Corporal Underground.  I still don’t know what we kept finding out there.  No one ever talked about it to our chain of command, and if our higher-ups ever knew, they never asked us to be on the lookout for any of it.

Inhuman things still lurk within arm’s reach across the Middle East.  The stories of Djinn seem true.  The stories of many things out there now seem true.
