Note from the Editor:
Having gone to New Orleans, I’d of course tried to get back in touch with the Corpsman who advised me to go there, but to no avail; word was he’d gotten himself thrown in jail, but, after the nightmarishly disgusting experience I had in the city he’d advised me to go to, I can’t say I was all that upset. A little jailtime would do the guy well; he had been a rather condescending and small-minded cunt more than once. He’d even directly insulted me for no reason at all, when all I’d done was update him in an effort to re-bond and catch up on old times.
Let me be clear; I very much appreciate all the books and concepts he got me into, and the way he kept my spirits up just by hanging out and talking philosophy and other things between missions. He told great jokes back then, and was brave and knowledgeable at his job. I was able to ‘skate’ out of a lot of bullshit busywork thanks to him, and that was priceless back during those ‘Lance Corporal Underground’ days.
That being said, he was a flat-Earther, I’d later find out. I didn’t know a damn thing about me or my calling. Ultimately, he cost himself a very selfless, genius, and powerful friend.
I guess I got to be around him when he was at his best, and life pulled and kept him away from me when he went into some kind of downward spiral. I’ve continued living by the good advice he passed to me. I’ve continued traveling out to see what I find at the places he told me were key.
