I very nearly became a Naval officer here.

Phase 1:

I earned a Congressional appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis of this state back in 2000, touring its campus shortly thereafter, and staying with a few of the upperclassmen –who showed me where I could climb out the top-story dorm building window to crawl around on the roof.  It was cool, but I never really felt pulled in this direction; life and officerdom aboard U.S. Naval ships just wasn’t right or destined for me.  Hat’s off to the outstanding young men and women who study, train, and deploy from here, though; I know I’ll be working with many of you in the years ahead.

Phase 2:

Since that first visit, this state’s major NSA facility has become a focal point of controversy, and many people have started to watch it just as it has been watching all of us.  Phase 2 promises to usher in a mutual stand-down in that field.  We might even see an overhaul of that infamous ‘three-letter agency’, and hopefully one the American people will feel much better about.

Phase 3:

Phase 3?  I might even be taking command.  Stranger things have occurred.  I’ll keep you posted.
