Introduction:

The New Horizon’s medical bay is a full-sized hospital, with equipment and personnel on par with those of Sihnon and Londinium (luxurious core-worlds of the 34 Tauri solar-system).  Medical staff work here in shifts, with 1/4 active, 1/4 on call, 1/4 off duty, and 1/4 resting.  All levels of specialists and experts, from nurses to surgeons, are available for the needs of the crew and passengers.

There are no all-curing stasis-tubes in here, just humans’ / 34 Tauri tech’-level surgery-pods with robotic arms, and healing-promoting fluid tanks/tubs.
Healing can take days to weeks, but rarely months unless there was an amputation or other major disfigurement.

Capacity:

This part of the ship has waiting rooms capable of seating dozens, and dozens of operating rooms, all of them soundproofed just in case anyone lets out a cry of pain that might distress those nearby.  There are also hundreds of normal rooms with hospital-beds on rollers (but anchored in place, in case of any gravity changes).  All together, several thousand people can be cared for in this part of TNH, with never more than a few in any room (other than the waiting-rooms) –unless they just want to be (such as with whole families during visiting-hours).

Low Activity:

Because TNH is also staffed with thousands of Inisfreeans, people tend not to get hurt anywhere onboard (and the Inisfreeans will never let on as to why).  They also tend to heal more quickly.  (Again, the Inisfreeans are leaving it up to the humans aboard TNH to notice and figure out why.)  This makes for few challenges for the medical staff of this part of the ship, thus they spend the majority of their time practicing various scheduled medical procedures as simulations.

2026 June update:

  • That said, with ~50 doctors/specialists/surgeons and ~1,350 nurses and other general medical personnel supporting them, that comes out to an avg. of (at capacity; 64K aboard, minus the ~16K ICVs who never need medical attention) 1 doctor for every 960 non-doctors, and 1 nurse/other for every 35-36 non.
  • Compare that to planet-side typical ratios in urban areas; 1 doctor for every ~1,887 non.
  • Sounds like TNH is better off, and in some ways it is, but medical emergencies in Space are more complex, even when it comes to safely transporting the sick/wounded.
  • Factoring in the three daily 8-hour shifts (and, yes, medical personnel here are ALWAYS off the clock after a full shift, to help ensure no burnout/disasters/mistakes, etc.), it is more like 1 doctor for every 2,824 non.

Patrolled:

Human and Inisfreean personnel patrol this part of the ship just as much as any other, ensuring help is always just a shout away; there is no calling the police and waiting several minutes for a squad-car to arrive when inside TNH.  Just like on foot-patrols planet-side during missions, each person on patrol is always within visual-range of another person assigned to patrol their hall (or other part) of the ship.  This makes it very difficult to surprise, distract, or remove any of them –at least without others in multiple directions down attached hallways immediately noticing.

2023 August Update:  Sensors

Biometric sensors are built into all TNH uniforms for humans, and monitored by two groups of personnel; all team-leaders / section-chiefs via their helmet/visor-displays, and the Medical wing’s officers/operators, ensuring no one tries to push through a distracting and risky ailment during work which could jeopardize themselves and/or others.

2026 June Update:  Advisory

Remember that a military psychologist’s job is to protect the command, not your job IN it.
Luckily for you, if you serve aboard this vessel while some of the Inisfreeans are also stationed in it, the ICVs will know exactly what your issue is without you having to risk your seconding or career to get assistance with it, and they will be happy to help soothe and stabilize you in the privacy of your own berth/quarters/wherever.
Some analyst really ‘digging’ into security footage and other data might one day deduce you had an issue you didn’t report through the preferred channels, but that will be another matter for another time.
