Introduction:

This is the name for a network in another dimension which connects all of the routinely-trafficked areas of the Milky Way Galaxy.  Think of it like an invisible subway system spanning the spaces between solar systems.  Like the Mass Relays network, it facilitates and greatly expedites travel, exploration, and trade which might otherwise be infeasible.  Further details here.

History:

In ancient times, the Webway was not needed; the worlds (including the giant worlds; stars) were much closer, there were atmospheres and oceans between them (rather than ’empty’ Space), and people were far more powerful (easily able to traverse those ‘in between’ spaces).  Before even that, all worlds were physically connected; Yggdrasil was the first ‘tree’, and its branches both connected and started (grew, like fruits) all of the original worlds.  It was only fairly recently (though still in ancient times, by modern standards/thinking) that the barely-perceptible energy-vortexes and lingering, far-stretched ‘channels’ (like rivers), which were once inside the branches of Yggdrasil, had to be stabilized, that incredible process making it seem like the whole thing had been made from nothing.

Additional Notes:

Rumor is that there is more to the Webway than just shortcuts across our one galaxy; there could be portals inside the Webway to other such networks spanning the entire Universe and beyond.

Inisfreean R+D:

It was determined that ICVs can stabilize or lock-in each Webway section they have Inisfree-level sex in —including to the point of it only allowing those they deem sexually-compatible in after that point.  This is how they shut down (troublesome/invaded/misused parts of) the Webway without it being possible to reopen/unlock/hack the thing.  Many incompatible species have since been permanently isolated in their solar-systems this way (at least when they don’t have higher-tech’ warp-drives to continue traveling such distances when unable to utilize the Webway).

2300 Update:

Having completed the Mapping Campaign, the Inisfreeans now know every part of the Webway, as well as how some of those parts will change in the many years ahead –and how they can influence and even stabilize these changes.
