Introduction:
Inspired by the rows of shipping containers converted by forward-deployed military forces in the Middle East during the early 2000s, as well as the urban warfare training facilities and mock towns built similarly in the barren backyards of some of the United States’ larger military bases, this neighborhood has been built entirely out of the same. Called ‘Conex boxes’; short for ‘Container Express’, these intermodal containers, each a rectangular prism, are painted white, stacked, and connected with special metal clamps, doorways, and other devices. Sometimes stacked three or four high, like a more stable version of a Jenga tower, they begin to form walls with internal living spaces, ‘sky bridges’, full-sized houses, and even small hotels.
–
Dimensions & Layout:
This neighborhood of Inisfree measures 726 feet across each of its four sides, giving it a foundation floor-space of 527,076 square feet. The shipping containers are typically placed side by side, and stacked one atop the other, though some constructs with these building blocks include intersecting, offset, and/or perpendicular formations. Dwellings range in size from a single shipping container, to houses with at least three of them per story, to mansions made of a few dozen. Basements are included in several of each dwelling size, each basement typically being one or two shipping containers. Rooms and suites within any level are the size and orientation of what one would find in a mobile home, motor-coach, or pre-fabricated house. The entire neighborhood is bordered by a square moat just deep enough to wade through.
–
Population Over Time:
Roughly 1 more person made this neighborhood/structure his/her home (or at least their 2nd/vacation home) every ~4 years from 2013 to 23000 A.D..
- 2013: the first guest or resident here
- 2022: ~3 living in this neighborhood this year
- ~23000 A.D. and beyond: ~5,000 at capacity
–
Special Features:
All of these Conex boxes is sound-proofed, luxuriously furnished, and comes standard with locking windows and doors. Most suites have jacuzzis and walk-in showers, while all clusters and the larger ‘houses’ also have narrow, shallow, cosmetic moats. Landscaping is kept to the flora of Joshua Tree National Park, sometimes in sandy yards, sometimes on balconies and the Conex rooftops. Invisible energy barriers allow human traffic while keeping out potential sandstorms.

Novels Excerpt:
Meeris in their rear-view mirror, they drove along a desert trail somewhat back the way they’d come, staying away from the highway this time, until another small town came into view. This one was about a third the size of the tent-town, but had much more living-space; within its square moat were stacks of clean white shipping-containers called Conex boxes, each stack providing room for many individuals or groups.
A few dozen vehicles were parked around the banks of the neighborhood’s moat, the rest kept in closed shipping-container garages. Some rooftops had motorcycle-like vehicles parked on top of them; those were hover-capable personal aircraft, Auz told her. There were people hanging out up there, too; they sat around small fire-tables on nice cushioned poolside chairs and tanning mats.
Inside each Conex-based building were suites of rooms that looked like very modern, almost futuristic show-homes. Some were so geometric, spartan, or tastefully furnished that they initially had the appearance of CGI or a hologram. A few people in the last one they walked into looked over, waved, and offered to give Lucifera a tour of the grounds.
–
History:
In 2022, King Auz set out to ‘christen’ and re-christen every single one of these containers-based homes, including all the rooms and rooftop patios/hangout areas of each, plus along/against their outer ground-level walls. This process is expected to take a year or two. He is working with many of his ICVs, wives, and kajirae to pull it off in that time.
–
Layout:
This image shows how ~a dozen container-based houses/mansions can be arranged across the original span of this property. Today, there are more than three times that, the smallest being 20′ containers, and the largest being ultra-modern high-rises including dozens of 40′ containers. That makes room for ~200 residents, plus thousands of guests during big events, such as neighborhood-wide parties.
