PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT

Bold, determined, and and possessing a will of steel, Colleen carries herself with a degree of discipline that is only befitting for someone who has spent almost her entire life under a strict and orderly regime. She is, after all, a martial artist. Always has been. And if she has it her way, she always will be. She’s a strong and independent woman (and she don’t need no man). Between the disciplined lifestyle and a string of misfortunes that led to a difficult life, Colleen knows and values how to get by by oneself with minimal resources and support. She’s a survivor, in a way, and far stronger and tougher than she looks.

Of course, there’s more to Colleen than being some hardcore sword-wielding martial artist stereotype. The girl has a very strong moral compass, and a far bigger heart than she tends to let on. Having been in a lonely and disadvantaged position several times in her life, Colleen knows the strength and power of a friendly face and one’s ability to lend a hand to those in need. It saved her, and she feels an obligation to pay the favor forward. She believes it is the duty of the strong to help the weak– and that there is no better method of teaching than to lead by example and teach one to fend and stand up for themselves. She can be harsh and unforgiving, but it all comes with the best of intentions.

The girl, however, is not without her flaws. With all the losses Colleen has faced in her life, she has a fear of being alone– truly alone. She needs a foundation, a friend or group with which she can feel a sense of community and belonging. Once it was with Bakuto and his illusory vision of the Hand. Now it’s with her community, the Defenders, and with Danny Rand. On a personal level, Colleen is slow to trust and open up to people. She is used to keeping her emotions and feelings under a tight control. And as much as Colleen wishes to belong to a group or community, she is even more afraid of appearing weak and vulnerable.

The last thing she ever wants is to be a damsel in distress. There’s nothing more that Colleen hates to be in the world.

It’s only when she feels a connection to a person that she allows herself to open up. Colleen doesn’t like to do anything in half-measures, and she doesn’t want to face more heartbreak and hurt again in life. All she truly wants to do is help others as best she can in her own way and to do the right thing, almost regardless of what it takes. Lucky for her, Colleen has found herself a way to do so. Thanks, Danny.

ABILITIES/SKILLS

• Martial Artist: Having spent nearly all of her life training in some form of martial arts, it is no surprise that Colleen is a master of several forms despite her young age. Kenjutsu, Kempo, Karate, and Jujitsu are her strongest suits, though she has something of a hodgepodge mix of knowledge in regards to other forms as well.

• Swordsmanship: Though it technically may fall under the martial arts umbrella, Colleen is a skilled swordswoman– her family’s heirloom katana isn’t just for show. Girl knows how to use it, and she’s not afraid to hold back either.

• Multilingual: Having grown up and lived in both Japan and America, and as a result of her mixed heritage, Colleen is perfectly fluent in both English and Japanese. She also picked up a fair bit of Mandarin Chinese in yer childhood years, but has fallen out of practice with it. She knows bits and pieces, but can’t carry out a conversation or the like.

HISTORICAL DATA

• Colleen Wing is born to Professor Lee Wing and his wife Azumi Ozawa. She is their first and only child.

• After a sudden and unexpected illness, Azumi passes away and leaves her husband and young daughter behind. Unable to cope with the grief of losing his wife and the stress of raising a child on his own, he sends Colleen to live with her maternal grandfather. Shortly afterwards her father vanishes from her life forever.

• Old age eventually claims Kanji Ozawa, leaving a teenage Colleen alone in the world.

• In what she considers a stroke of luck, Colleen becomes acquainted with a man named Bakuto. He brings her into an organization known as the Hand. Charmed by his seemingly altruistic nature and talents, Colleen becomes a loyal and devoted follower.

• As recognition for her loyal service, Bakuto grants the Chikara Dojo to Colleen. Tasked to help at-need individuals in self-defense and training, she dutifully sets out to undertake her part in (what she believes to be) the Hand’s helpful mission to help teach the most vulnerable to protect themselves. Unbeknownst to her, she is serving as a recruiter for an organization that is far more sinister than she can even imagine.

• While out placing advertisements for her financially struggling dojo, Colleen first encounters Danny Rand. At the time, she only believes him to be some crazy hobo or something. She gives him a few dollars out of pity. When he shows up at her dojo later in the day, she rejects his offers to work under her.

• Although she believes her encounter with Rand to be a one-and-done deal, he once again turns up on her doorstep, bringing along nothing but trouble with him. What follows feels like something out of a crazy movie: assassins, mysterious organizations, and more forms of trouble in almost every shape and size imaginable. Driven to find and stop the source of this trouble, Colleen finds herself lending her skills to assist Danny in his investigations.

• Their investigations lead them back to Colleen’s old sensei Bakuto. It is where that she comes to see the entire awful truth of the Hand, a discovery that devastates Colleen. Her faith shaken, she eventually realigns herself to Danny to finish his war.

• Once the threat of the Hand and its New York allies are (seemingly) defeated, Colleen decides to remain at Dany’s side to help him seek out and destroy as many cells of the Hand as they are able to across the world.

RP SAMPLE

It was late. The sun had set over the skyline of New York long ago, leaving the streets of the city to be lit by a sometimes colorful, but oddly comforting mixture of lights: streetlights, interior lighting that filtered out through the thousands (if not millions) of windows of the city, and the lurid lighting of storefronts and advertisements. Even in the latest hours of the night, there was always a steady glow to be found, always keeping some degree of the darkness at bay. Even in the latest hours of the night, the whole of New York gleamed and glowed like some great beacon of civilization and life alike.

The city that never sleeps indeed.

Ever since she had settled down and opened her modest dojo here in Chinatown, Colleen had learned to find some odd degree of comfort in the steady glow of lights that bled in through the iron gratings of her windows that always kept the sparse rooms of her living and work place awash in a dim illumination. Not that she was afraid of the dark– there were better and far more sinister things to fear, she knew– but it was nice being able to see without constantly having to turn the lights on and off. It saved on the bills, and with as little money as the young woman made from her work, every little bit helped. New York wasn’t exactly cheap.

Not that Colleen’s mind was on that (for the moment, at least). Nor was it on the topic of Danny Rand and all the troubles that followed him like a shadow, or the fact that the clock on her phone informed her that it was well past two in the morning. Well, maybe she was thinking about that last bit a little. Were it a normal night she would have long been asleep in her bed.

But sleep had not come to Colleen this night. After she had sent the last class of the night home, it was habitual for her to partake in a quick dinner before she carried out a small solo practice on her own before turning in. She had done all her things, engaging in her nightly ritual…. All save for the final step: sleep. She had lain in bed for hours, tossing and turning uselessly all the while. Yet no matter how hard she tried, despite the fact that she was weary from a long, busy day, she still found herself lying awake.

Finally she gave up trying. With a sigh Colleen disentangled herself from the sheets and rose from her bed. Barefoot, she padded silently from the cramped room that was her living space to the dojo portion itself. Illuminated only by the outside lights of the city, the gloom gave the room an eerie, almost sinister appearance. It did not unnerve her in the slightest as she strode across the room to where her rack of practice swords stood. Perhaps, she decided as she grasped one of the wooden training swords, perhaps that could clear her mind enough to get some sleep. The smooth wooden hilt felt good in her hand. Even as she pulled it off the rack and slid towards the center of the room in a single fluid motion, already the swordswoman was feeling better. Calmer. To meditate and go through the basic forms and motions had always had a profoundly calming effect on her since she was a child, and tonight was no exception.

Ten minutes, she told herself as she assumed a stance. Ten minutes, and then maybe she could finally get some rest. Who knew what the next day would bring..

Colleen & Auz:

The two met on the street where she was putting up fliers.  It started to rain hard, and Auz offered her his jacket.  She had been through so much, and remained standoffish, suspicious of him and anyone being nice.  Having gone through that himself (and, honestly, still dealing with it in his own way), he left his card and gave her all the space and time she might need.

Later on, he started supporting her dojo to show his good intentions and general interest in fitness, especially when it came to the far-older and far-wiser Eastern way of getting people fit.  He’d only sampled a few martial arts during his youth and military years, and dreamed up the framework for a new style and martial-arts educational-system inspired by the Tao of Jeet Kune Do by Bruce Lee.  It was time to move a few steps closer to becoming intermediate at one of the styles himself.

For months, Colleen tutored and tested him.  He paid for his lessons by paying her rent; his donations far exceeded the contributions of any student.  When he let his flirty side show, she fought him harder, not yet aware that it was an ancient martial art all its own –and becoming all His own.  He let her do this, appreciating it in a way, and never tried his luck beyond the occasional and politely-brief smirk and glance; she already saw and sensed his interest in her, and that he could and chose to control it, so that was where they needed to be at that phase in their aligned paths.

Fast-forward years since she taught him to be a decent martial artist at that dojo he made sure stayed open for her and the community, and she has since been invited to Inisfree.  Colleen helped upgrade the dojos and martial arts program there.  Auz treated her to an evening across the Ryokans neighborhood, then offered her a permanent place to stay and call her own; the blue-roofed Asian Mansion near the base of that section of Inisfree’s central-mountain slope is all hers (since Wendy Temujin, representative of all ancient Asians and their hidden civilizations, uses one of the Auz Dome‘s ceiling mansions instead).
