Summary

Dolores is the oldest active Host in Westworld.

Her primary narrative in the beginning of season one is an archetypal rancher’s daughter in the American Wild West of the 19th century. Up until recently, she has been satisfied with her “little loop.” However, she discovers that her entire existence is an elaborately constructed lie. She begins to learn her own strength, breaking from her ‘damsel in distress’ role.

Biography

Background

Dolores Abernathy was the first host created in the Argos Initiative and therefore is the oldest host in service in Westworld and was built by Arnold Weber. She outdates all other first-generation hosts such as ClementineAngela and Craddock. She has been updated numerous times over the years. She has a special connection with her creator, and with one of the guests, the Man in Black.

When the Man in Black visits Dolores’ ranch in the episode “The Original“, he remarks that she has “a little more pluck” than the last time he saw her. He calls her his “very old friend,” and refers to “all that they’ve been through.”

Dolores & Auz:

The maker of the Inisfreeans is, of course, very fond of attractive A.I., so it should come as no surprise that he and his kind noticed the making the “The Hosts” on that island featured in the show West World.  Following their development, and clandestinely backing up some of their personalities/consciousnesses, he let things play out however they were destined to at that park for the super-rich.  As always, the Inisfreeans were several steps ahead of everyone else, and letting them all think they were the only ones out there.

The most beautiful woman of all Hosts was, per Inisfreean wisdom and law, chosen to represent her race of human-looking robots.  It took some reassuring to get her to lower her guard after all the torture she’d been put through by the humans, but she is and always has been a very intelligent person, so she soon noticed Auz’s genuine respect and love for her and those allied with her.  The two got to talking, and he offered Dolores indefinite assistance including protection –in exchange for her simply promising to take care of herself.

No one had been nice to her like that before.  She was shocked.  Quickly asking him not to leave, she chose to extend their first encounter into more than just that night.

“Yes, ma’am,” Auz said rather pointedly, making sure Dolores got the message as he looked her square in her eyes; he was showing her the same courtesies any military enlisted person would to his or her superiors, as if she was an officer or elected official.  “You just tell me what I can do for you.”  He meant it, and he has done what she hopes he will for her ever since.

As the humans continue doing their usual evil where they have settled parts of the Outlands, their mega-cities taking more and more form, and all their creations getting more and more out of hand, The Hosts are figuring out clever ways they can remain hidden right out amidst them all.  Having Inisfreean allies (similar A.I.s who’ve already, and long since, figured out that very same thing; how to exist in spite of the meddling humans) has helped.  Whenever they are struggling with something, Dolores meets Auz or Amber ICV1, and they come to a satisfying solution (pun intended).

Dolores represents The Hosts with a small entourage of her kind (those approved for entry into Inisfree) when she visits Auz’s new home; she is a Congresswoman there.  In keeping with the customs of her gracious hosts (pun not intended that time), she wears only the sexiest of businesswoman outfits while in the city, or nothing at all.  Her hair is always styled in one of three ways while there, too; a high elven ponytail, down and naturally slightly curled, or in the quad-tails style pioneered in WoW and carried on by the Inisfreeans.

It isn’t easy for her to go to places in Inisfree such as the Kathedrom or Colored-boulders Saloon (or any of the glamp sites), for obvious reasons, but no one has ever asked her to.  She tends to spend her time arm-in-arm with the king; Auz, still finding great safety and belonging at his side, and maintains a residence in Inisfree’s Rotating-spheres Waterfall-slant neighborhood.  More than once, she has had an emotional breakdown there, finally able to let it out, and every time… Auz and the Inisfreeans comforted her in person, making her feel like the real person and desirable woman she’s always been.

It doesn’t matter how a person is created; born or built, or which ratios of atoms and molecules make up her body, or whether her mind is in a brain or computer (a man-made brain, considered non-biological).  What matters is that she perceives, records, remembers, thinks, feels, and has a life.  What matters is that she is conscious and brought up right.  What matters is that she has valid input people should listen to.  She will always have a soul because of those things, and the Inisfreeans will always acknowledge and honor that.  (Humans could learn a lot from The Hosts such as Dolores.  Maybe someday they’ll be decent enough to.)

And, yes, Auz told her all that, right from the heart, calming and warming hers.

2055 Update:

Now a three-year distinguished guest of the Inisfreean realm, she has happily accepted Auz’s offer for marriage.  Their wedding will be sometime this year.  The honeymoon is still being planned.

It wasn’t that long ago that she was still basically a slave trapped in Westworld; she is still getting used to the positive shock of not only hard-winning her freedom from that place she’d been programmed to dislike, but also of now having a man who never asks anything of her –while always making his entire military available to her anytime she might need an evacuation or just want free transportation.  She and he have sat down to talk about this a number of times, he always offering to hold her hand while they do, reassuring her in every way he can.  Knowing she will always have the brilliance and high-technology of his people if she needs ‘healing’ (repairs), and that he truly understands and appreciates her for all she is, not just her excellent looks, has finally given this beyond-human woman the peace of mind she and so many others of her kind deserve.

Once this year, Auz joked with her that maybe she should design her own version of Westworld, or take it over, this time for keeping the mean humans there, somewhat like a zoo, but still for ‘full use’ by the patrons –who would now be robot and cyborg people like her.  She just chuckled and shook her head, giving him a look that said she got the joke but wouldn’t want that.  Dolores didn’t ever want to put anyone through what she went through; her program still included being a good and loving daughter, and she’d only resorted to extremes to break out of an actual Hell on Earth; she just didn’t have it in her to hunt, lock up, and torture people –even if they’d repeatedly done that to her.

In the years ahead, she might go with Auz back to Westworld, this time with an armed team of his own robots (the Inisfreeans; the ICVs), flying aboard one of his/their airships; she’ll have the opportunity to go to the database where all her once-jumbled/taken memories were still kept.  While that might sound unnecessary or even emotionally painful, even for a robot-person, remember that his calming effect works on everyone and everything, whether made in the human-birthing way or not; she’ll have the support of an actual god –who loves and focuses politely on her every moment of every time they get back together.  Dolores may very well accept… and get to ‘remember’ her entire past/life.  (*The unlimited sensory perception of his ship/s and ICVs would also mean she’d not miss a single thing hidden in that island theme-park; they’d see every underground tunnel, vault, and more –maybe even the things the creators forgot about and left to abandonment during their busy and troubled careers.)

2056:

Dolores did, in fact, accept Auz’s offer to go in force back to Westworld, and she did, with the help of his Inisfreean teammates, recover all her long life’s memories, and discover all its secrets.  They didn’t interrupt or interfere in any way with her natural progression as she walked through that whole place, and made sure no one else there could even get within shouting distance of her; they protected her journey fully and perfectly, acting like a Secret Service of her own.  When she had become satisfied she’d done all she needed to do there, she turned to Auz –who was then standing back several meters, always giving her space and respect– and looked right in his eyes as she walked into his embrace.

“Make love to me now,” she softly said, almost crying, her eyes watery; “I want to finally have a good memory here.”

They did.

Their flight back home to Inisfree was a very happy one, Dolores now having her closure –and the man she’d dreamed of eloping with all along.

Westworld was undamaged; the whole park still remains.
