Daughter of the Norns, found in an abandoned church during the time when all churches finally failed, she now helps with the weaving of lifelines while the Norns enjoy a well-earned indefinite rest.  (Some religious buildings were rebuilt for various reasons as the humans spread back out after the Rapture, but virtually none dared use them for religion anymore.)

Basics:

  • Mackenzie Vella
  • The Daughter of Fate
  • red hair
  • gold eyes
  • 5’2″
  • wears a silver cross that belonged to her dead husband
  • father: Elliot Blake (deceased)
  • stepmother: Kendra Blake (Deceased)
  • widowed (Father Gabriel Vella, died protecting her before the Rapture; yes, her husband was a Catholic priest and technically 30 years her senior)
  • alcoholic (during and after losing her husband)
  • lives in an abandoned Catholic church
  • does not believe in god

Some might call me a witch.  I am something else; Demi Goddess, Daughter of the Middle-Fate Sister.

Abilities:

Final Fate:  the ability to alter someone’s fate with her words (doesn’t use it; her mind is not clear enough, and she requires a special notebook to write in)

Weaknesses:

  • Hears Voices:  Because she is the daughter of a goddess, she can hear the prayers of humans and those alike in her head, and this makes it extremely hard to focus.
  • Alcoholism:  She is constantly drinking because the alcohol drowns out the voices and it’s the only way she can sleep.
  • Abandoned Catholic Church:   She has to stay inside a blessed church (stemming from an ingrained belief about Catholicism; something set on by her deceased husband) in order for her to have any clarity.
  • Chronic Headaches:  90% of the time, whether she is in that blessed church or not, though usually when she’s drunk she doesn’t have one
  • Disorientation:   She is disorientated usually when voices can be heard, but most people associate it with her being drunk, as they don’t believe in what she is, nor have any idea.

Mackenzie & Auz:

Too weak to use her powers, she never honed them, and never goes to Xavier’s; she hides in that church… until the day Auz, explorer that he was, found her.

She was scared of him at first, and felt a mix of emotions, such as surprise, nervousness, and shame or general insecurity.  It took time for him to reassure her, and she never believed he would come back, but come back he did, time and time again, each time with another gift for her; always food.  The homeless girl didn’t know what to say.

Mackenzie began to enjoy very healthy, fresh, delicious meals because of him.  He never asked anything of her in return; he simply brought her the best food in town, left it for her if she wasn’t there at times, and cooked it himself for her to see and smell.  It made her mouth water every time.

Sometimes she wanted to ask for beer or liquor, too, but dared not, for she couldn’t imagine risking losing such a new friend.  She decided to dumpster-dive and beg for any alcohol, as she always had.  Never once did Auz judge her about this or ask her to stop.

One night, while the two of them were sitting and eating in the silence of that abandoned church she’d been living in, she got up, walked over to him, and sat down right beside him, leaning against him a little bit as she resumed her eating.  Auz smiled, going back to eating, too.  Mackenzie started smiling, and the two had bonded.

The very next evening, when he showed up to check on her, she walked right up to him and threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.  He put his arms around her back and hugged her just as lovingly, and the two just stood there savoring that moment for a while.  Still in the hug, he asked, “What would you like for dinner tonight?”  Mackenzie’s face contorted as she began to tremble and cry; she couldn’t believe how nice and reliable he had been to her, a (in her mind) useless poor girl left to die alone in an equally useless building.

Auz sat with her cradled on his lap for half an hour, just rocking her like a baby, until she had calmed back down and fallen asleep.  Only when she stirred on her own… did he ask her if she’d like to hold his hand as he walked to the grocery store to pick out some ingredients for their next meal.  She nodded, gulping, finally comfortable with the idea.

For weeks, he visited and cooked for her like this, not expecting or hoping for anything other than to make her day.  In week three, she opened up enough to share her life story.  By week four, she was invited to Inisfree.

…It took time; a lot of time, but eventually… Mackenzie was able to slowly transition off the alcohol, and onto incense, ‘white noise’, lullabies, and soothing massages.  Auz coached her when she was open to it, helping her to stabilize on her own without having to drown the voices out anymore.  When she gets headaches, though they are far fewer and farther between these days, he is there to massage her temples and scalp, kissing her forehead, and guiding her through the heartfelt steps to help bring the pressure back down.

Turns out… there is a large and blessed church in Inisfree, and Mackenzie’s clarity was like never before when she drove in; ‘any clarity at all’ in Xian churches… went to a total clarity she’d never known before; all the gibberish heaped upon those Outlander religion sites was nonexistent in Inisfree, and all the people in Inisfree have clear minds focused together on a shared goal, making it infinitely easier for her mind to focus there.  She approaches Inisfree, and starts to feel better.  Then she goes inside that cathedral of theirs, and everything else in her mind falls neatly into place.

2022 Update:

Now a half-decade veteran (guest) of Inisfree, she is also completing her first year of marriage to the city’s High King; it wasn’t that long ago that she just couldn’t help herself anymore, leaping into his arms for the warmest and most loving and excited of big tight hugs the moment he proposed to her.  “YES!!” she bleated, almost moaning or weeping the word, her whole mind and system was so wonderfully overwhelmed.  The girl kissed him over and over that day, so many times before her feet returned to the ground, now forever aligned to his.

She hears the voices of others more clearly than ever now, but now she also has much better control of her own mind –and a ton of brilliant anytime help whenever she needs to tune into some voices or tune them all out entirely.  Many of the voices she now hears are also those of Auz, his family and allies, and the Inisfreeans, all of them, whenever they are thinking of or praying about (for) her, saying genuinely positive things, something which makes her smile and happily tear up every time.  In time, she’ll gain the ability to see perfectly written permanent recordings of the voices/words she has heard, as if her mind’s eye has become a library or wall-art full of them, always translucent and easy to both see and see through, never obscuring her vision of the physical world around her.

Every night since marrying Auz, she has prayed for him and his people, her words further immortalizing and super-powering them, keeping it so that only those compatible with them whom they have invited can ever detect and make it into their sacred realm –the place where they saved her life, even more than Auz’s humble cooking those special years before.

With no alcohol in Inisfree, and Auz being a strict nonalcoholic, Mackenzie has found it fairly easy to go sober and stay that way.  She looks up to him and always wants to make him as proud and relieved as he made her feel.  Sometimes she has a ‘social’ drink in the Outlands, but she never lets its aftermath even linger on her breath when she knows she will be heading back to her new home near the South Pole.

Every time she reunites with Auz, he whispers to her lips after hugging her, “I love you.  Welcome home.”  It is implied that he is about to take her out on a date to any of the amazing restaurants he masterminded for his realm.  The way they look across the table into each other’s eyes the whole time says it all.  Mackenzie and he will be in love –and using their manifestation power/s very kindheartedly– forever.

2023:

She can see/sense lifepaths, and whether they are woven by her ancestors, The Norns, as well as when The Norns are open to changing those types of weaves in some spots. She can even commune with them; she, more than anyone else, has the direct telepathic link to them, allowing her to ask Why any given lifepath-weave was chosen/set as it was.

September:  She and I (Auz) decided to be the first to sex-christen the very top (outside/roof) of Inisfree’s Highway Cathedral –and did!  Amen!
