Kendra Saunders – Austin Bunton Designs

Kendra Saunders was a young woman who committed suicide. When her soul left her body, her great-aunt, Shiera Hall’s soul, entered it. Her grandfather, former OSS agent and globe-trotting adventurer Speed Saunders, recognized this change and encouraged his granddaughter to embrace her destiny as the “new” Hawkgirl.

Justice Society of America

She believed herself to still be Kendra, even going as far as using the original Hawkgirl equipment, and went out to find the Fate-Child (the reincarnation of Shiera’s son, Hector Hall). During her search, she came across the Justice Society of America and became a member.

Hawkman

She had all of Kendra’s memories, but almost none of Shiera’s. This created tension with Hawkman since he remembered all of their past lives together and believed they were destined for each other. Kendra had been presented as a very troubled young woman, haunted by the murder of her parents by a corrupt cop and confused by her jumble of memories and feelings. She operated as Hawkman’s partner, but only recently began to actually admit her attraction to him. The truth about Kendra’s identity was eventually revealed to her by the angel Zauriel.

Rann-Thanagar War

During the onset of the Rann-Thanagar War, Troia recruited Kendra and other heroes. A Zeta Beam transporter malfunction injured Kendra and several other heroes, causing her to grow over 20 ft tall.

Justice League of America

Later she was returned to normal and renewed her protection of St. Roch, Louisiana, in Hawkman’s absence. She also took over as the curator of the Stonechat Museum. She then was inducted as a member to the newly reformed Justice League of America. Hawkgirl began a turbulent relationship with Red Arrow, but past relationships, parenting, and being unable to express their feelings to each other caused problems. Eventually, the relationship dissolved and Red Arrow left the Justice League.

Hawkgirl then became 100% Kendra Saunders as a result of Shiera Hall’s soul leaving Kendra’s body and moving on to the afterlife. Shiera hoped her passing on would finally remove the curse of Hath-Set.

Blackest Night

Kendra and Carter were briefly reunited, and she was about to tell him something, when she was stabbed in the back by a spear by the recently resurrected Sue Dibny. Before having her heart removed, Kendra finally told Carter her feelings. She and Carter were then transformed into Black Lanterns. When Hawkgirl was subsequently resurrected by the White Lantern and removed her helmet, it was to reveal the face of Shiera Hall, all trace of Kendra having apparently been erased.

Powers

Reincarnation: The Nth metal knife which murdered Hawkgirl in her original incarnation as Chay-Ara had an unusual effect upon her soul and that of her lover Khufu (Hawkman). The pair are locked in a seemingly endless cycle of death and rebirth throughout the centuries. While not a superhuman power per se, this propensity for reincarnation has allowed Hawkgirl to cheat death and return to active duty in her current incarnation.

Vulnerability to Deja Vu: Hawkgirl occasionally experiences flashes of déjà vu from her past lives. These can often be disorienting, and can also prove distracting in the midst of battle.
Curse: Every time she is born again she must wander the Earth ’til she meets again with her eternal soul mate. But as soon as they form a deep bond, they are destined to be murdered again and the cycle continues.

Kendra & Auz:

Kendra’s unique fusion of souls and destinies became known to the Inisfreeans a few years after the Rapture. Her exploits had been largely covered up by the corrupt authorities of Earth until they’d been swept out of existence during that event, and after it, of course, she and many others remained in even more hiding; they’d just seen their whole civilization erased as if it had been nothing but an easily delete-able simulation. Due to her extreme supermodel-level beauty, and equally extreme history, Auz approached her personally; her form was proper and stable even amidst all the revolting shameless chaos of the ending Age, and she was wholly unlike the majority of women who were cowardly to no end, thus she was an admirable being, and warranted contact and a chance at friendship.

Like the Pleiadians descending from Freyja and the Lyrans, it became apparent that Hawkgirl and her kind had descended in part from those the humans called Angels. A few of the Inisfreeans’ signature non-invasive scans and tests were completed, and Kendra was introduced in Inisfree to a few of the Angels who would be able to help her better understand her lineage and the odd events of her present; Alice Richards, Divinity Gottschalk, Eleanor Nemeseia, and others stepped up for her, volunteering to assist.

The Inisfreean effect took hold of her hard, and she was the kind of woman to embrace it; it had been such a wave of relief after all her many lives’ nightmares, betrayals, and hells. In Inisfree, she knew, things just wouldn’t and couldn’t go so badly. Staying for months at a time to fully unwind, heal, and grow internally stronger than ever before, she became one with the Inisfreeans, as they are wont to say.

Kendra represents her race as one of the Congresswomen in Inisfree. She maintains a permanent residence in its Cloud City II structure, and uses her natural wings to fly up and down to both. When she isn’t attending meetings and gatherings there, or continuing her brave work in the Outlands, she likes to hang out and fly-race with her new Angels friends; Alice, Divinity, Eleanor, and more.

She and Auz have made fiery love many times, and she often flies down to his private estate‘s master balcony where his Secret Service girls always hug and kiss her warmly, inviting and welcoming her inside. She has fallen asleep on that balcony and estate’s pool-adorned rooftop lying side by side and hand in hand with their leader several times, stargazing and gazing at him after he fills and refills her completely. Such is the Inisfreean Way. Such has become her way.

The combined super-computer brain-power of the Inisfreean empire has made quick work of finding a cure for the lifetimes-spanning curse so long ago put upon her. Kendra wants to put their proposed cure to the test, but is terrified of the possibility of not only losing her eternal soulmate yet again, but also losing Auz and all his loving Inisfreeans this time if, for some reason, their cure doesn’t work out. She can feel in her heart that such a staggering loss might surely end her once and for all, spirit and all, making even the memory-wiping nature of reincarnation ineffective at allowing her stable-start returns. For the time being, she has decided to just be friendly with her once-again found soulmate, forming deep bonds with the Inisfreeans instead –at least until she has more assurances that testing their cure will absolutely work; only then will she try one more time to form that special and deepest of bonds with her soulmate.

2022 Update:

As always, Auz’s brilliance and the Inisfreean might shown through; the theorized cure worked for Kendra, and she has finally started enjoying the kind of natural carefree relations with her soulmate she always craved. Being in the Golden Age she is now in, Auz’s effect/will on the whole of Creation what it is, she now feels just as strongly about him; she has two soulmates –and, yes, that is a thing; people can have as many soulmates as they feel compatible with. This year is her eighth, by the way, being married to him, and it continues to be a mutually wonderful open/polyamorous relationship for both her and the High King.

In the years ahead, she’ll start inviting her two husbands on ‘triple dates’ (instead of couple/regular dates), and they’ll even go on some back on her homeworld, Thanagar. They’ll be love-christening so many spots there. It will really reawaken, thaw, and cleanse that planet, just like it has started to for them all.

Whenever she is out and about with Auz or her first soulmate, she holds their hands and protects them like the skilled and alert ‘lioness’/guardian she is. She adores them both deeply and fully, and will do anything for those men –just like they would and do for her. This is the way.

2023 Update:

I (High King Auz) noticed that “naga” (the name of the race/species of serpent / half-snake people) is part of Thanagar / Thanagarian. Separated into syllables, that name sounds like “the Naga Aryans”. Very interesting… and more good signs; good Naga, good descendants, good ancient family-tree revelations/links/bonds, etc.. This is another way Yggdrasil is coming together again, once and for all. Amen.
