History:

Natasha Alianovna Romanova[1] (Russian: Наталья Альяновна “Наташа” Романова; aliasNatasha Romanoff; Russian: Наташа Романоф), colloquialBlack Widow (RussianЧёрная Вдоваtransliterated Chyornaya Vdova) is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by editor and plotter Stan Lee, scripter Don Rico, and artist Don Heck, the character debuted in Tales of Suspense #52 (April 1964). The character was introduced as a Russian spy, an antagonist of the superhero Iron Man. She later defected to the United States, becoming an agent of the fictional spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D., and a member of the superhero team the Avengers.

Publication history

The Black Widow’s first appearances were as a recurring, non-costumed, Russianspy antagonist in the feature “Iron Man“, beginning in Tales of Suspense #52 (April 1964). Five issues later, she recruits the besotted costumed archer and later superhero Hawkeye to her cause. Her government later supplies her with her first Black Widow costume and high-tech weaponry, but she eventually defects to the United States after appearing, temporarily brainwashed against the U.S., in the superhero-team series The Avengers #29 (July 1966). The Widow later becomes a recurring ally of the team before officially becoming its sixteenth member many years later.

The Black Widow was visually updated in 1970: The Amazing Spider-Man #86 (July 1970) reintroduced her with shoulder-length red hair (instead of her former short black hair), a skintight black costume, and wristbands which fired spider threads. This would become the appearance most commonly associated with the character.[2]

In short order, The Black Widow starred in her own series in Amazing Adventures #1–8 (Aug. 1970–Sept. 1971), sharing that split book with the feature Inhumans. The Black Widow feature was dropped after only eight issues (the Inhumans feature followed soon, ending with issue 10).[2]

Immediately after her initial solo feature ended, the Black Widow co-starred in Daredevil #81–124 (Nov. 1971–Aug. 1975), of which #92-107 were cover titled Daredevil and the Black Widow. Daredevil writer Gerry Conway recounted, “It was my idea to team up Daredevil and the Black Widow, mainly because I was a fan of Natasha, and thought she and Daredevil would have interesting chemistry.”[2] Succeeding writers, however, felt that Daredevil worked better as a solo hero, and gradually wrote the Black Widow out of the series.[2] She was immediately recast into the super-team series The Champions as the leader of the titular superhero group, which ran for 17 issues (Oct. 1975–Jan. 1978).[3]

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Black Widow appeared frequently as both an Avengers member and a freelance agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. She starred in a serialized feature within the omnibus comic-book series Marvel Fanfare #10–13 (Aug. 1983–March 1984), written by George Pérez and Ralph Macchio, with art by penciller Perez. These stories were later collected in the oversized one-shot Black Widow: Web of Intrigue #1 (June 1999).

The Widow guest-starred in issues of Solo Avengers, Force Works, Iron Man, Marvel Team-Up, and other comics. She had made frequent guest appearances in Daredevil since the late 1970s.

She starred in a three-issue arc, “The Fire Next Time”, by writer Scott Lobdell and penciller Randy Green, in Journey into Mystery #517–519 (Feb.–April 1998).

A new ongoing Black Widow comic title debuted in April 2010. The first story arc was written by Marjorie Liu with art by Daniel Acuña.[4] Beginning with issue #6 (Sept. 2010), the title was written by Duane Swierczynski, with artwork by Manuel Garcia and Lorenzo Ruggiero.

Black Widow appeared as a regular character throughout the 2010–2013 Secret Avengers series, from issue #1 (July 2010) through its final issue #37 (March 2013).

Black Widow appears in the 2013 Secret Avengers series by Nick Spencer and Luke Ross.[5]

Black Widow appears in a relaunched ongoing series by writer Nathan Edmondson and artist Phil Noto. The first issue debuted in January 2014.[6]

In October 2015, it was announced that Mark Waid and Chris Samnee would be launching a new Black Widow series for 2016 as part of Marvel’s post-Secret Wars relaunch.[7]The first issue was released in March 2016.[8]

Limited series and specials

Aside from the arcs in Marvel Fanfare and Journey into Mystery, the Black Widow has starred in four limited series and four graphic novels.

The three-issue Black Widow (June – Aug. 1999), under the Marvel Knights imprint, starred Romanova and fully introduced her appointed successor, Captain Yelena Belova, who had briefly appeared in an issue of the 1999 series Inhumans. The writer for the story arc, “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider” was Devin K. Grayson while J. G. Jones was the artist.[9] The next three-issue, Marvel Knights mini-series, also titled Black Widow (Jan. – March 2001) featured both Black Widows in the story arc “Breakdown”, by writers Devin Grayson and Greg Rucka with painted art by Scott Hampton.[10]

Romanova next starred in another solo miniseries titled Black Widow: Homecoming (Nov. 2004 – April 2005), also under the Marvel Knights imprint and written by science fiction novelist Richard K. Morgan, with art initially by Bill Sienkiewicz and later by Sienkiewicz over Goran Parlov layouts.[9] A six-issue sequel, Black Widow: The Things They Say About Her (Nov. 2005–April 2006; officially Black Widow 2: The Things They Say About Her in the series’ postal indicia), by writer Morgan, penciller Sean Phillips, and inker Sienkiewicz, picks up immediately where the previous miniseries left off, continuing the story using many of the same characters.[11]

She starred in the solo graphic novel Black Widow: The Coldest War (April 1990),[10] and co-starred in three more: Punisher/Black Widow: Spinning Doomsday’s Web (Dec. 1992); Daredevil/Black Widow: Abattoir (July 1993); and Fury/Black Widow: Death Duty (June 1995), also co-starring Marvel UK‘s Night Raven.

Black Widow is also featured in the short story Love Is Blindness in I Heart Marvel: Marvel Ai (2006) #1 (April 2006), where she instigates a humorous fight with Elektra over Daredevil’s affections. The comic is stylized to look like Japanese animation and uses images, not words, inside the speech and thought bubbles to convey what the characters are saying/thinking.[12]

In 2010, the year in which the character, called only Natasha Romanoff, made her film debut in Iron Man 2, the Black Widow received two separate miniseries. Black Widow and the Marvel Girls was an all-ages, four-issue series that chronicled her adventures with various women of the Marvel Universe, including Storm, She-Hulk, the Enchantress, and Spider-Woman. It was written by Paul Tobin, with art by Salvador Espin, Veronica Gandini and Takeshi Miyazawa.[13] The second four-issue miniseries, Black Widow: Deadly Origin, was written by Paul Cornell, and featured art by Tom Raney and John Paul Leon.[14]

Fictional character biography

Early life

First costume (and bouffant hairdo). From The Avengers #36 (Jan. 1967), art by Don Heck.

Natasha was born in Stalingrad (now Volgograd), Russia. The first and best-known Black Widow is a Russian agent trained as a spy, martial artist, and sniper, and outfitted with an arsenal of high-tech weaponry, including a pair of wrist-mounted energy weapons dubbed her “Widow’s Bite”. She wears no costume during her first few appearances but simply evening wear and a veil. Romanova eventually defects to the U.S. for reasons that include her love for the reluctant-criminal turned superhero archer, Hawkeye.

The first hints to Natasha Romanova’s childhood come from Ivan Petrovich, who is introduced as her middle-aged chauffeur and confidant in the Black Widow’s 1970s Amazing Adventures. Petrovich tells Matt Murdock that he had been given custody of little Natasha by a woman who died immediately afterwards, during the Battle of Stalingrad in autumn 1942. He consequently felt committed to raise the orphan as a surrogate father and she eventually trained as a Soviet spy, being eager to help her homeland.[15] In another flashback, set in the fictional island of Madripoor in 1941, Petrovich helps Captain America and the mutant Logan, who would later become the Canadian super-agent and costumed hero Wolverine, to rescue Natasha from Nazis.[16]

A revised, retconned origin establishes her as being raised from very early childhood by the U.S.S.R.’s “Black Widow Ops” program, rather than solely by Ivan Petrovitch.[17] Petrovitch had taken her to Department X, with other young female orphans, where she was brainwashed and trained in combat and espionage at the covert “Red Room” facility. There, she is biotechnologically and psycho-technologically enhanced—which provides a rationale for her unusually long and youthful lifespan. During that time she had some training under the Winter Soldier, and the pair even had a short romance.[18] Each Black Widow is deployed with false memories to help ensure her loyalty. Romanova eventually discovers this, including the fact that she had never, as she had believed, been a ballerina. She further discovers that the Red Room is still active as “2R”.

The KGB arranged a marriage between Natasha and the renowned Soviet test pilot Alexei Shostakov. However, when the Soviet government decided to make Shostakov into their new operative, the Red Guardian, he is told that he can have no further contact with his wife. Natasha is told that he died and is trained as a secret agent separately.

The Avengers

Romanova grew up to serve as a femme fatale. She was assigned to assist Boris Turgenov in the assassination of Professor Anton Vanko for defecting from the Soviet Union, which served as her first mission in the United States. Natasha and Turgenov infiltrated Stark Industries as part of the plan.[19] She attempted to manipulate information from American defense contractor Tony Stark, and inevitably confronted his superhero alter ego, Iron Man. The pair then battled Iron Man, and Turgenov stole and wore the Crimson Dynamo suit. Vanko sacrificed himself to save Iron Man, killing Turgenov in the process, using an unstable experimental laser light pistol.[20] Romanova later meets the criminal archer Hawkeye and sets him against Iron Man,[21] and later helped Hawkeye battle Iron Man.[22]

Later, Natasha again attempted to get Hawkeye to help her destroy Iron Man. The pair almost succeeded, but when Black Widow was injured, Hawkeye retreated to get her to safety.[23] During this period, Romanova was attempting to defect from the Soviet Union and began falling in love with Hawkeye, weakening her loyalty to her country. When her employers learned the truth, the KGB had her gunned down, sending her to a hospital, convincing Hawkeye to go straight and seek membership in the Avengers.[24][25]

The Red Room kidnapped and brainwashed her again, and with the Swordsman and the first Power Man, she battled the Avengers.[26] She eventually broke free from her psychological conditioning (with the help of Hawkeye), and successfully defected, having further adventures with Spider-Man, with Hawkeye and with Daredevil.  She ultimately joins the Avengers as a costumed heroine herself.[27]

S.H.I.E.L.D. and Daredevil

Later still, she begins freelancing as an agent of the international espionage group S.H.I.E.L.D. She is sent on a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. mission to China by Nick Fury. There, with the Avengers, she battles Col. Ling, Gen. Brushov, and her ex-husband the Red Guardian.[28] For a time, as writer Les Daniels noted in a contemporaneous study in 1971,

… her left-wing upbringing was put to better use, and she has lately taken to fighting realistic oppressor-of-the-people types. She helps young Puerto Ricans clean up police corruption and saves young hippies from organized crime.  … [The splash page of Amazing Adventures #3 (Nov. 1970)] reflects the recent trend toward involving fantastic characters in contemporary social problems, a move which has gained widespread publicity for Marvel and its competitor, DC.[29]

During her romantic involvement with Matt Murdock in San Francisco, she operates as an independent superhero alongside Murdock’s alter ego, Daredevil.[30] There she tries unsuccessfully to find a new career for herself as a fashion designer. Eventually, her relationship with Murdock stagnates, and after briefly working with Avengers finally breaks up with Murdock, fearing that playing “sidekick” is sublimating her identity.[31]During a HYDRA attempt to take over S.H.I.E.L.D., she is tortured to such an extent that she regresses back to an old cover identity of schoolteacher Nancy Rushman, but she is recovered by Spider-Man in time to help Nick Fury and Shang-Chi work out what had happened and restore her memory, with “Nancy” developing an attraction to Spider-Man before her memory is restored during the final fight against Madam Viper, Boomerang and the Silver Samurai.[32] She later returns to Matt Murdock’s life to find he is romantically involved with another woman, Heather Glenn,[33] prompting her to leave New York.[34] Natasha ultimately realizes that Matt still only thinks of her in platonic terms, and elects to restrain herself from any advances.[35]

The Champions

After their breakup, the Widow moves to Los Angeles and becomes leader of the newly created and short-lived super team known as The Champions, consisting of her, Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze), Hercules (with whom she has a brief romance), and former X-Men Angel and Iceman.[36]

Her friends usually call her “Natasha”, the informal version of “Natalia”. She has sometimes chosen the last-name alias “Romanoff”—evidently as a private joke on those who are not aware that Russian family names use different endings for males and females. She has been hinted to be a descendant of the deposed House of Romanov and a relation to Nicholas II of Russia.

21st century

Natasha crosses Daredevil’s (Matt Murdock) path again when he attempts to slay an infant he believes to be the Anti-Christ while under the influence of mind-altering drugs. After Daredevil’s one-time love, Karen Page, dies protecting the child, Natasha reconciles with Murdock, revealing she still loves him, but noting that he is too full of anger to commit to a relationship with her.[37]

Natasha is challenged by Yelena Belova, a graduate from the training program through which Natasha herself was taught the espionage trade, who is the first to ever surpass Natasha’s marks and considers herself the rightful successor to the “Black Widow” mantle.[38] Natasha refers to her as “little one” and “rooskaya (meaning “Russian”), and encourages her to discover her individuality rather than live in blind service, asking her “why be Black Widow, when you can be Yelena Belova?”[39] After several confrontations, Natasha subjects Yelena to intense psychological manipulation and suffering in order to teach her the reality of the espionage business, and an angry but disillusioned Yelena eventually returns home and temporarily quits being a spy. Although Matt Murdock is appalled by the cruelty of Natasha’s treatment of Yelena, Nick Fury describes the action as Natasha’s attempt at saving Yelena’s life.[40] After bringing the Avengers and the Thunderbolts together to overcome Count Nefaria, Natasha supported Daredevil’s short-lived efforts to form a new super-team to capture the Punisher, originally believed to be Nick Fury’s murderer.  Despite recruitment endeavors, however, this vigilante group folded shortly after she and her teammate Dagger fought an army of renegade S.H.I.E.L.D. androids; ironically, she soon afterward worked with both Daredevil and Punisher against the European crime syndicate managed by the Brothers Grace.  Months later, her pursuit of war criminal Anatoly Krylenko led to a clash with Hawkeye, whose pessimism regarding heroic activities now rivaled her own.

Shortly after the Scarlet Witch’s insanity seemingly killed Hawkeye, and again disbanded the Avengers, Natasha, weary of espionage and adventure, traveled to Arizona but was targeted. Andrea discovers that other women had been trained in the Black Widow Program, and all are now being hunted down and killed by the North Institute on behalf of the corporation Gynacon.  Natasha’s investigations led her back to Russia, where she was appalled to learn the previously un-imagined extent of her past manipulation, and she discovered the Widows were being hunted because Gynacon, having purchased Russian biotechnology from Red Room’s successor agency 2R, wanted all prior users of the technology dead. Natasha finds and kills the mastermind of the Black Widow murders: Ian McMasters, Gynacon’s aging CEO, who intended to use part of their genetic structure to create a new chemical weapon.  After killing McMasters, she clashed with operatives of multiple governments to help Sally Anne Carter, a girl Natasha had befriended in her investigations, whom she rescued with help from Daredevil and Yelena Belova.  She soon returned the favor for Daredevil by reluctantly working with Elektra Natchios to protect his new wife, Milla Donovan, from the FBI and others, although Yelena proved beyond help when she agreed to be transformed into the new Super-Adaptoid by A.I.M. and HYDRA.

Civil War/Initiative

During the Superhero Civil War, Natasha becomes a supporter of the Superhuman Registration Act and a member of the task force led by Iron Man.[41] Afterward, the registered Natasha joins the reconstituted Avengers.  S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury is presumed killed, and deputy director Maria Hill incapacitated, so Natasha assumes temporary command of S.H.I.E.L.D. as the highest-ranking agent present.

Later, Tony Stark assigns Natasha to convey the late Captain America‘s shield to a secure location, but is intercepted by her former lover, Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, who steals the shield. Natasha and the Falcon then rescue Barnes from the Red Skull‘s minions, and bring him to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, where Stark convinces Bucky to become the new Captain America. Afterward, Natasha accompanies Bucky as his partner for a brief time until she is called back by S.H.I.E.L.D.[42] She later rejoins him and Falcon for the final confrontation with the Red Skull, helping to rescue Sharon Carter. She and Bucky have restarted their relationship.[43] She later plays an important role in the capture of Hercules. However, due to her respect of the Greek god, she let him go.[44] Soon Natasha, along with the rest of the Avengers, gets involved in the current Skrull invasion.[45] Afterwards, she stayed as Bucky’s partner.[46] She also assists former director Maria Hill in delivering a special form of data to Bucky.[47]

Thunderbolts

Norman Osborn discovered Yelena Belova breaking into an abandoned S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, and offered her the position of field leader of the new Thunderbolts. On her first mission, she and Ant-Man take control of Air Force One with the Goblin, Doc Samson, and the new President aboard.[48] It was suggested she faked her apparent death (as the Adaptoid) but it is never explained how.

A conversation with the Ghost implies that Yelena is working as a mole for someone else and that she may even be someone else disguised as Yelena. She is later seen talking privately through a comm-link to Nick Fury.[49]

Osborn orders Yelena to lead the current Thunderbolts to kill former Thunderbolt, Songbird. Fury orders “Yelena” to rescue and retrieve Songbird, for the information she might possess about Osborn and his operations. Yelena finds Songbird, and reveals to her that she was really Natasha Romanova in disguise.[50] She tries delivering Songbird to Fury, but the Thunderbolts have also followed them.[51] The trio are captured as Osborn reveals he had been impersonating Fury in messages all along to set Natasha up in order to strengthen the Thunderbolts and lead him to Fury. She and Songbird are brought to be executed but manage to escape when Ant-Man, Headsmen and Paladin turn on the rest of the Thunderbolts and let them go.[52]

Heroic Age

At the start of the “Heroic Age,” Natasha is recruited by Steve Rogers into a new black-ops wing of the Avengers, dubbed the Secret Avengers. She travels to Dubai with her new teammate, Valkyrie, where they steal a dangerous artifact which the Beast then studies, noting that it seems like a distant cousin of the Serpent Crown.[53] In the story “Coppelia”, she encounters a teenage clone of herself, code named “Tiny Dancer”, whom she rescues from an arms dealer.[54]

Fear Itself

During the “Fear Itself” storyline, Black Widow and Peregrine are sent on a mission to free hostages being held in a Marseille cathedral by Rapido. He and a group of mercenaries are trying to exploit the panic over the events in Paris to steal France’s nuclear arsenal.[55]

Ends of the Earth

During the “Ends of the Earth” storyline, involving one of Doctor Octopus‘ schemes, Natasha is one of only three heroes left standing after the Sinister Six defeat the Avengers,[56] joining Silver Sable and Spider-Man to track the Six (albeit because she was closest to Sable’s cloaked ship after the Avengers were defeated rather than for her prowess).[57] She is later contacted by the Titanium Man to warn her and her allies about Doctor Octopus’ attempt to rally other villains against Spider-Man.[58] She is knocked out along with Hawkeye by Iron Man during a battle against the Avengers when they were temporarily under Octavius’ remote control.[59]

Secret Wars

During the incursion event between Earth-616 and Earth-1610, Natasha is involved in the final battle between the Marvel Universe’s superheroes and the Ultimate Universe’s Children of Tomorrow. She pilots a ship holding a handpicked few to restart humanity after the universe ends, co-piloted by Jessica Drew. Her ship is shot down during the battle though, and she is killed in the ensuing explosion.[60]

As the evacuation of Earth-616 begins in light of the fact that Earth-1610 is about to come crashing down as part of the “Last Days” storyline, Black Widow is seen standing atop a building with Captain America who gives her a list of people to save and bring aboard the lifeboat. As she tells Sam she can’t save them all, Sam explains it’s Natasha’s job to assist in the effort to save as many people as possible before Earth as they know it is destroyed. As she leaves, her mind transitions to Cold War Russia, where a young Natasha (here called Natalia) speaks with two Russian functionaries in the infamous “Red Room”. She is given her first mission: travel to Cuba and locate a family called the Comienzas, who are at risk from Raúl Castro‘s regime and who may have information of vital importance to Russia. She is told to rendezvous with another agent, her classmate Marina, and befriend the family under the guise of a Russian businesswoman. Natasha assures them of her competency and leaves. When one of the officers questions her youth, the other assures him, “she’s a killer. She will not disappoint.” Natasha meets Marina in Cuba and the two friends catch up before meeting with the Comienzas that night at a local bar. Using her talent for deception, she casually and politely convinces the husband and wife that she’s seeking inside information to help her import various goods into the country. The Comienzas explain they can’t reveal said information, prompting Natasha to later explain to Marina that the family might need “a little push”. Not too soon she effectively began terrorizing the family into desperation. First, she plants an American flag on their doorstep to mimic someone accusing them of defecting to the United States. Later after meeting with one of the Russian officers from the Red Room to report her progress, she detonated a car bomb outside their home when the first attempt didn’t make them “nearly desperate enough”. Following the car bomb explosion, Natasha declares the family is indeed desperate enough to reproach for information. Before letting Natasha go, the officer announces she has one additional task before her mission is over: Marina has become too much enamored with her civilian guise, and is now a security risk. Natasha will have to eliminate her.[61] Flipping to the present, Black Widow is saving as many people as she can, but she quickly flashbacks to Havana. Natasha and her then Red Room partner Marina are trying to help a family defect. Natasha’s orders are simple: Kill the parents and make it public. When Natasha asks if she should kill the child too, her boss looks horrified that she would be so OK with that and tells her no. Having no problem following orders she sets up a meet and using a sniper rifle she takes out the pair without blinking. Next she shoots Marina’s boyfriend then Marina herself. Next she shoots Marina’s cat. Flipping back to the present, Black Widow is back saving people from the incursion as the reason that triggered Natasha’s flashback is revealed … a man she saved is holding his cat. This dark, heartless side of the Black Widow shows why she is trying so hard to do good today.[62]

Secret Empire

During the “Secret Empire” storyline, Black Widow appears as a member of the underground resistance at the time when most of the United States has been taken over by Hydra and Captain America who was brainwashed by Red Skull’s clone using the powers of the sentient Cosmic Cube Kobik into believing that he was a Hydra sleeper agent.[63]While Hawkeye assembles a strike force of Hercules and Quicksilver to find the Cosmic Cube fragments, Black Widow sets off to kill Rogers herself reasoning that even if Rick’s theory is true, the man Rogers was would prefer to die than be used in this manner. She finds herself followed by the Champions as she establishes her version of the Red Room.[64] While preparing to shoot Captain America with a sniper rifle, she rushes to prevent Miles Morales from killing him as predicted by Ulysses,[65] and is struck by his shield, breaking her neck and killing her.[66] Despite the return of the real Steve Rogers and the downfall of Hydra, Natasha’s death, along with other casualties, remains.[67]

Clone of Natalia Romanova

However, while observing a dictator who recently rose to power due to his support of Hydra, Bucky witnesses the man being assassinated in such a manner that he believes only Natasha could have pulled off the kill, and believes he sees the Black Widow (actually Yelena Belova) depart from her chosen vantage point.[68]

It was later discovered that a series of clones of the original Black Widow had been produced by the Black Widow Ops Program following her death. Its member Ursa Major bribed Epsilon Red to let him add the current memories of the deceased Natalia Romanova to one such clone while secretly disposing of the bad programming. The Black Widow Ops Program tasked the clone into taking out the remnants of Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D.[69] She revealed herself to Winter Soldier and Hawkeye while also killing Orphan Maker. To keep them from interfering, the Black Widow clone locked Winter Soldier and Hawkeye in a safe room within the Red Room.[70] The Black Widow clone rose to the ranks of the Red Room while secretly persuading the recruits to turn against their masters. When Winter Soldier and Hawkeye arrived at the Red Room, the Black Widow clone dropped her cover where she began to kill her superiors, liberate the recruits, and destroy all the clones and Epsilon Red. When the authorities arrived, The Black Widow clone, adopting the name Natasha Romanoff, left the Red Room, where she left a note for Hawkeye to stop following her and for Winter Soldier to join her in ending the Red Room.[71]

During the “Infinity Countdown” storyline, the Black Widow clone traced a dead drop signal left by a revived Wolverine in Madripoor. She discovered that Wolverine had left the Space Infinity Gem in her care.[72] The Black Widow clone meets up with Doctor Strange who wants to dispose of the Space Stone. Doctor Strange did not want to take it as he knows what would happen if they are in the same proximity. She is among the Infinity Gem holders who are contacted by Doctor Strange stating that they need to reform the Infinity Watch in order to safeguard the Infinity Gems from such calamities like Thanos.[73]

Captain America had Black Widow’s clone infiltrate Roxxon as an ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. operative-turned-contractor named Angel to spy on Roxxon and keep an eye on Weapon H. As Angel, she accompanied Weapon H and his assigned team to Weirdworld up to the point where Morgan le Fay of Earth-15238 exposed her identity to Weapon H.[74] After getting out of the wreckage of the Roxxon Research Outpost, Black Widow reveals to Blake that she was sent to get the Roxxon group out of Weirdworld. Dr. Carrie Espinoza and the Roxxon soldiers with her salvage a Weirdworld Adamantine Crystal filled with Morgan le Fay’s mystic energies which Dr. Esponoza states to Black Widow and Blake that it can power all of New York for 10 years. As the group arrives near the Inaku village, they witness Weapon H fighting Korg as Black Widow is contacted by Sonia Sung from Roxxon’s headquarters. Black Widow tries to help Sonia get through to Weapon H until Dario Agger arrives.[75]

Powers and abilities

The Black Widow has been enhanced by biotechnology that makes her body resistant to aging and disease and heals above the human rate;[76] as well as psychological conditioning that suppresses her memory of true events as opposed to implanted ones of the past without the aid of specially designed system suppressant drugs.

The white blood cells in her body are efficient enough to fight off any microbe, foreign body and others from her body, keeping her healthy and immune to most, if not all infections, diseases and disorders.

Her agility is greater than that of an Olympic gold medalist. She can coordinate her body with balance, flexibility, and dexterity easily.[77]

Romanova has a gifted intellect.[78] She displays an uncanny affinity for psychological manipulation and can mask her real emotions perfectly. Like Steve Rogers, she possesses the ability to quickly process multiple information streams (such as threat assessment) and rapidly respond to changing tactical situations.[78]

The Black Widow is a world class athlete, gymnast, acrobat, aerialist capable of numerous complex maneuvers and feats, expert martial artist (including Jiu jitsu, Aikido,[79]Boxing,[79] Judo,[79] Karate,[79] Savate,[79] Ninjutsu,[80] various styles of Kung Fu and Kenpo, as well as the Russian martial art Sambo), marksman and weapons specialist as well as having extensive espionage training.[81] She is also an accomplished ballerina.

Romanova is an expert tactician. She is a very effective strategist, tactician, and field commander. She has led the Avengers and even S.H.I.E.L.D. on one occasion.[78]

Equipment

The Black Widow uses a variety of equipment invented by Soviet scientists and technicians, with later improvements by S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists and technicians. She usually wears distinctively shaped bracelets which fire the Widow’s Bite electro-static energy blasts that can deliver charges up to 30,000 volts, as well as “Widow’s Line” grappling hooks, tear gas pellets, and a new element introduced during her ongoing series during the “Kiss or Kill” arc called the “Widow’s Kiss”—an aerosol instant knock-out gas she has modified.[78] She wears a belt of metallic discs; some are disc-charges containing plastic explosives, while others have been shown to be compartments for housing other equipment. Her costume consists of synthetic stretch fabric equipped with micro-suction cups on fingers and feet, enabling her to adhere to walls and ceilings. In the 2006 “Homecoming” mini-series, she was seen using knives, unarmed combat, and various firearms, but she has since begun using her bracelets again.[78] While in disguise as Yelena Belova, when infiltrating the then Osborn-sanctioned Thunderbolts during “Dark Reign”, she used a specialized multi-lens goggle/head-carapace that demonstrated various technical abilities enhancing vision and communication.  Later, she has used a modified gun based on her Widow’s Bite wrist cartridge, during her adventures alongside the new Captain America.[81]

Gifted spy Natasha Romanoff is more than worthy of her moniker, Black Widow.

Ruthless, efficient, and exceptionally skilled, Natasha strikes fear into the hearts of her enemies. Although she once operated on the side of evil, her innate heroism allowed her to overcome her upbringing and defect, setting her on a lifelong path of redemption.

A Hero of Our Time

Natasha Romanoff was born in the Soviet Union as Natalia Alianovna Romanova (Наталия Альяновна Романова). Although her exact parentage is unknown, it is rumored that she is related to the late Romanov dynasty—the former rulers of Russia—but those claims have so far been unproven. Orphaned as a child, she was rescued during an attack on Stalingrad by a man named Ivan Petrovitch Bezukhov, who looked after and trained the girl.

As she grew older, Natasha’s talents caught the attention of Soviet Intelligence, soon to be known as the KGB, and was recruited into their ranks. During World War II, Natasha was kidnapped by the Hand, who sought to make her a brainwashed master assassin. Luckily, she was rescued by Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Logan (who would later become Wolverine). During the War, the young Natasha served in the Russian army where she fell in love with another young soldier named Nikolai. Despite their initial happiness, their union did not end blissfully. Nikolai was killed in the war and the baby girl they conceived did not survive birth.

Following World War II, Natasha progressed into the Black Widow Program, where young girls like her were conditioned to become sleeper agents. Trained at a facility called the Red Room, Natasha was also enhanced with the Soviets’ version of the Super-Soldier serum, gifting her with peak human strength and stamina, as well as resistance to disease and slowed-down aging. Natasha has memories of studying to be a ballerina as a cover during this time. However, because her psyche was tampered with by the government, it is unclear if she actually was ever a ballerina, or these memories were implanted.

As her Black Widow training progressed, she encountered (and romanced) Captain America’s former best friend and sidekick, James Buchanan Barnes, who had been brainwashed into the becoming the assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Their relationship didn’t last long as she was set up to marry Alexei Shostakov, a renowned test pilot. Though they had a happy marriage, the KGB faked his death during an experimental rocket test in order to make him into the Red Guardian, the USSR’s version of Captain America, a hero who would represent and defend the nation.

Natasha’s grief over his death drove her further into the clutches and control of the Red Room Academy and she finally earned the title of Black Widow.

Although she initially worked against the Avengers and United States on the behest of her superiors, Natasha ended up defecting to join S.H.I.E.L.D. and later the Avengers to become a true Super Hero.

Natasha Romanoff uses her enhanced skills as the Black Widow.

The Red Death

Her extensive training in the Red Room made Natasha into a warrior with few peers. She is skilled in many forms of martial arts including aikido, judo, karate, savate, and boxing. In addition, she is an amazing gymnast, and uses her acrobatics to gain an edge in combat.

Her fighting skills are augmented by a variant of the Super-Soldier serum, which she was given as part of the Black Widow program. Although this treatment doesn’t give her superhuman strength like Captain America, Natasha operates at peak human condition. The serum also grants her an improved immune system and enhanced durability, which explains why she has barely aged over the years, retaining her youthful appearance.

Natasha Romanoff never comes unprepared and brings many gadgets to help her combat her enemies. Her black body suit is composed of a kevlar-like substance created for maximum protection. It is equipped with two bracelets on each wrist that fire the “widow’s bite”—a high-frequency electrostatic bolt with a range of 20 feet that discharges up to 30,000 volts, able to stop even a superhuman opponent. These bracelets can also act as radio transmitters and contain tear gas cartridges that Natasha can deploy. The fingers and feet of her costume have microscopic suction cups that allow her to stick to any regular building surface. Her belt occasionally contains discs with the explosive power of four pounds of TNT.

Along with her extraordinary fighting abilities, Natasha has a few other talents that make her one of the best spies and assassins in the world. She is multilingual; in addition to speaking Russian and English, she also is fluent in French, German, Chinese, and more. An excellent markswoman and expert in weaponry, she uses automatic weapons and knives as needed to fulfill her missions. Her skills of infiltration and stealth, coupled with an ironclad will, make Black Widow a force to be reckoned with.

Crime and Punishment

Although Natasha Romanoff’s initial enemies were Iron Man and the Avengers, she has since joined the side of good and faced off against a cadre of Super Villains.

These enemies are often linked to whichever team she is helping at the time. When she fights alongside Daredevil, she assists him in taking down his villains, like the Hand, Purple Man, or Mr. Fear. As a member of the Champions, Natasha’s foes include Warlord Kaa, Swarm, Godzilla, MODOK, Doctor Doom, and the Vanisher’s Sentinels, among others. She also assists Hercules with this team to fight his enemy Pluto, the Olympian God of Death.

As part of S.H.I.E.L.D. and one of Nick Fury’s best agents, she takes on any enemy of the counter-terrorist organization, most often Hydra or A.I.M. Her long history of Avengers membership means that she has battled most of the enemies that have stood against the Super Hero team.

Natasha Romanoff attempts to prove her loyalty to Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.

One of her more persistent foes is Damon Dran, AKA Indestructible Man, who captures Ivan Petrovich in order to lure Black Widow and defeat her and replace her with a fake that would kill Nick Fury. Natasha thwarts this plot and others, finally bringing Dran to S.H.I.E.L.D. to be imprisoned (where he is killed by a rogue agent).

Given her dark history, she also regularly combats adversaries from her past in the Red Room, who still seek to destroy her life. The personal nature of these enemies makes them all the more difficult to deal with for her, as Natasha deeply regrets her time working for the KGB and wants to eliminate her superiors and the havoc they have wreaked on the world.

Of all her Red Room opponents, the most noteworthy is Yelena Belova, a rival Black Widow who trained after Natasha. While they work together occasionally, and Natasha tries to help her find redemption, Belova is most often linked to criminal organizations like Hydra, so the two remain at odds. Belova’s own considerable talents make her a worthy adversary and foil to Natasha.

Finally, while not a traditional villain by any measure, Black Widow is tormented by her guilt and is continually seeking to assuage it.

From Russia with Love

For a super spy who was trained and conditioned to have no emotional attachments, Natasha Romanoff has actually developed a considerable number of friends and allies, whom she works hard to support and defend and who care about her deeply as well.

Although their relationship began in conflict, Natasha has a close relationship with fellow Avenger Iron Man. She often assists him in battle, and Iron Man helps her when the Red Room activates a dormant persona and triggers a brainwashed state. They even enjoy a romantic interlude during a trip to Russia where they defeat her former student and partner Boris Bullski (Titanium Man), although their relationship progresses no further. Natasha also backs Iron Man during the first Super Hero Civil War and supports his efforts to legitimize the Superhuman Registration Act.

Another Avenger with whom Natasha maintains a warm friendship is Captain America. She values the heroism of Steve Rogers and respects his dedication to his moral compass. While they occasionally find themselves on opposite sides of conflict—like when she manipulated him on Fury’s behalf or when they were on opposing sides during the super human Civil War—they always end up remaining close friends.

Natasha has had a few romantic relationships with her fellow heroes, which all play important roles in her development and mean very much to her. Some notable ex-lovers include Clint Barton (Hawkeye), Matt Murdock (Daredevil), Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier), and Alexei Shostakov.

Hawkeye attempts to reconnect with Black Widow.

Although her marriage with Shostakov is arranged by the KGB, it is a happy one, and Natasha is devastated by his apparent death. Their story is one of great tragedy; every time she discovers that Shostakov is alive, he is either almost immediately seemingly killed, a life-model decoy, or a villain. Still, she remembers their initial time together as a happy one.

While Hawkeye and Natasha have not been romantically linked in a long time, his influence was instrumental in helping her defect and join the Avengers, setting her on a path of redemption. For this reason, he will always be an incredibly important person in her life, and she values the heroic archer very much, though she often teases him when they work together. She considers him one of her best friends, and he feels the same way about her.

Daredevil is also a significant person in Natasha’s life. The two work together on and off for years, and they can rely on each other always coming to the other’s aid. Although they realize they can never be together, Natasha will always protect Daredevil (and whatever love of his is in trouble at the time), and he will similarly help her through difficult times in her life.

Bucky Barnes is one of the few figures who, while coming from the Red Room, Natasha trusts and cherishes. They first develop a romantic relationship when Barnes trains her as his Winter Soldier persona in the Red Room, though they are eventually split by their superiors. They reconnect and renew their romantic relationship later again when Barnes becomes the new Captain America, thanks to her support. She also appreciates him being one of the few people who understands the depth of the grief and shame that she feels over her past, as he has a very similar one.

Another small, but not unimportant, ally is the stray cat that takes a liking to Natasha and worms his way into her home and heart. Though she ironically names him Liho, meaning misfortune in Russian, she cares for her little furry friend.

The Elusive Avenger

As a Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff completed many missions for the KGB. On her first one in the United States, she and operative Boris Turgenov were sent to assassinate a Russian scientist, Anton Vanko.

Vanko had defected to the United States with his Crimson Dynamo armor and began working with Tony Stark. In addition to eliminating Vanko, Romanoff and Turgenov were also tasked with taking back the Crimson Dynamo, killing Tony Stark, and sabotaging his plant. The mission went south, however, when Vanko sacrificed his life to defend his armor and Stark. He was killed, along with Turgenov.

Having failed in her mission, Natasha remained in the U.S. in order to right her wrongs. At first, she faked her own defection (unlike Vanko’s legitimate switch) and romanced Tony Stark until she was able to steal his anti-gravity ray gun. However, Stark soon uncovered that she was the cause of the destruction against the U.S. and deactivated the device.

With her cover blown, the ever-resourceful Natasha partnered with Hawkeye, an outlaw at the time, manipulating him into working for her against Iron Man. After improving Hawkeye’s archery arsenal by adding high-tech arrows, the two attacked Iron Man. During the course of the battle, Stark deflected an explosive arrow to defend himself, but it ended up injuring Natasha. Hawkeye—in love with the Russian spy—rushed to help her, allowing Stark to get away.

Hawkeye rushes to aid Black Widow after she is injured fighting Iron Man.

She continued to try to get him to help on her missions, but it was Hawkeye who ended up influencing Natasha. Though misguided at the time due to her manipulation and his love for her, Hawkeye was still a hero at heart, and his idealism and strong moral compass helped Natasha find her own. Despite a lifetime of conditioning, Natasha chose to pursue her own destiny and defected.

The KGB was not eager to let their operative go and first extorted and then brainwashed her into submission, forcing her to fight the Avengers (which Hawkeye had joined in the meantime). Still, iron-willed as ever, Natasha fought past these violations and truly severed ties with her past.

She began to work for Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. and assisted the Avengers on missions against Super Villains like the Sons of the Serpent, the Ultroids, and more. During one such assignment, she and Hawkeye were captured by General Yuri Brushov, and Natasha discovered that her husband, Alexei Shostakov was alive and had become the Red Guardian. Like his wife, Alexei also had little love for his superiors and wanted to support the Avengers—so much, that he seemingly sacrificed himself to protect the Super Hero team.

Once again, Natasha had no idea that Shostakov had actually survived, and, devastated, she left the Avengers before they offered her full membership. During this trying time, Natasha considered accepting Hawkeye’s proposal of marriage, as she cared for him deeply, and also mourned when she briefly believed him to be dead.

However, when her old mentor Ivan Petrovitch resurfaced in the U.S. to serve as her friend and confidant, Natasha’s spirits lifted and she broke ties with Hawkeye to pursue a solo vigilante career, fighting the Astrologer, Watchlord, and others.

It was then that Natasha encountered someone who would become very important to her—Matt Murdock. She saved Daredevil from the Owl, although neither knew at the time that this had been a manipulation by the evil android, Mr. Kline. As part of a grand scheme to affect the future, Kline framed Natasha for murder in order to have Matt Murdock defend her in court. The stressful nature of the trial pushed her to become romantically intertwined with Murdock, all according to the android’s plans. Although Kline died before he could finish his plans, Daredevil and Black Widow became a crime-fighting duo. At one point, the couple moved to California in order to continue their quest against evil, only returning to New York to stand against Magneto after an encounter with a resentful Hawkeye. Natasha once again left the Avengers after her stint in New York, feeling unsure about her place on a team, and resumed crime-fighting in California with Daredevil.

She ended their relationship soon after, as Natasha felt that Murdock did not see her as an equal, although she decided to stay in California. Despite her reservations about team membership, she joined the Los Angeles-based Champions, whose roster included Angel (Warren Worthington III), Iceman (Bobby Drake), the vigilante Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze), and the Avenger Hercules, with whom Natasha developed a romantic relationship. As a master tactician, Natasha became the team leader with unanimous backing from her fellow heroes. The group helped her defeat several Russian villains seeking vengeance and worked together to conquer a cadre of Super Villains. It ultimately dissolved, however, due conflicts between the various members’ personalities and priorities.

Natasha returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers, assisting both as she could. One such mission included helping the Avengers battle Korvac—a cosmically-powered being seeking to overthrow the universe and become its benevolent ruler. During this fight, Natasha realized how insignificant mortal relationships must seem to beings who live eternally, including Hercules, effectively ending their romantic relationship. Natasha then helped the Avengers rescue Daredevil when he was mind-controlled by the criminal Death-Stalker (Philip Sterling).

Luck turned for the super-spy when new Avengers leadership forced a roster change, excluding her, and she was captured by the Viper. While she escaped, she retreated into a pre-programmed S.H.I.E.L.D. persona—schoolteacher Nancy Rushman. When her true mind was restored, she helped Spider-Man and other heroes rescue a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier from Viper.

After this, Natasha’s path once again crossed with Daredevil’s. First, she helped him defeat Bullseye after her abduction by the cruel assassin. Then, she was fatally poisoned by Daredevil’s enemy, the Hand, an evil ninja order. She was immediately resurrected by Stone, a member of the Chaste (a group of warriors opposed to the Hand). She joined Daredevil and Stone in trying and failing to prevent the revival of Elektra Natchios—a vicious assassin who was both Murdock’s great love and enemy.

Her Super Hero duties also often forced Natasha to face her past demons. She was manipulated by Russian dissidents using a life-model decoy of Alexei Shostakov. After rejoining the Avengers and becoming deputy leader, she battled Starlight, another former Russian operative who had become the Red Guardian after Shostakov. She had to contend with being overtaken by a long-dormant persona “Oktober,” part of her conditioning in the Red Room Academy. Thanks to Iron Man, Natasha broke free of the brainwashing.

After an internal dispute over the Kree-Shi’ar War, Captain America left his active position at the Avengers. Black Widow became the team leader, a role she took very seriously. Natasha always cared deeply about the well-being of those close to her, making the apparent death of Daredevil and then the likely death of her mentor Ivan Petrovich at the hands of Red Skull very difficult on her. Adding her teammates only made things harder. When Iron Man faked his death, then Captain America and Nick Fury seemingly perished, Natasha mourned deeply. And when most of the active Avengers roster was wiped out fighting Onslaught, she blamed herself and suffered from survivor’s guilt. She unsuccessfully tried to rebuild the team by seeking out new recruits, like her old teammates Angel and Iceman, but was forced to shut down the team after numerous rejections.

Driven by self-reproach, Natasha worked almost obsessively to bring in all of the Avengers’ previous foes. It was Daredevil, fearing for her condition, who helped her work through her guilt. This was, of course, easier to do once the Avengers resurfaced alive.

She did not rejoin as a full-time member, however, and assisted Nick Fury in a counter-terrorist mission in Latveria. Unfortunately, this operation forced her to manipulate Wolverine, Captain America, Daredevil, and others on Fury’s behalf. She attempted to atone for her role in this by renewing her ties with Iron Man and helping him fight some Super Villains of his own.

Her next reunion with Daredevil was more difficult than the last, as he had been drugged by Mysterio (Quentin Beck) into believing that an innocent baby was the Anti-Christ. Although she helped Daredevil overcome his delusions, Bullseye was able to kill the baby and Karen Page, Murdock’s lover. Though the grief-stricken Murdock reconciled with Natasha, they both understood they could never be together.

Natasha was once again forced to confront her past with the appearance of Yelena Belova, her Black Widow successor, who was eager to prove herself as the superior one. Horrified at the thought that another woman would go through what she did, Natasha had their faces surgically swapped so that Yelena could see that she was being manipulated and considered expendable. Despite her good intentions, however, Yelena felt violated by what had been done. Later, Yelena would demonstrate how different she was from Natasha by agreeing to be transformed into the new Super-Adaptoid by A.I.M. and Hydra.

Soon after, a mad Scarlet Witch turned on the Avengers and unleashed simulacrums of their greatest enemies, leading Hawkeye to sacrifice his life to defend them against the forces of the alien Kree. The group disbanded and a weary Natasha retired to Arizona.

Unfortunately, Natasha didn’t get to live in peace as she was targeted by a corporation called Gynacon, who was hunting down ex-Black Widow agents and killing them. They had recently purchased biotechnology from the Red Room and wanted to make sure nobody else was using it. During her investigation, to her horror, Natasha also discovered just how much she had been manipulated. She killed the CEO of Gynacon, Ian McMasters, making her a wanted criminal.

Always looking to make up for her past, Natasha then sided with Iron Man during the Super Hero Civil War. This was despite the fact that many of her friends and allies, notably Captain America, opposed the Superhuman Registration Act. After Steve Rogers was killed during the conflict, Natasha convinced Bucky Barnes, with whom she’d rekindled her romance, to take his best friend’s mantle and become Captain America.

Continuing her spy work for Nick Fury, Natasha posed as Yelena Belova in order to infiltrate a group called Thunderbolts, led by the corrupt tycoon Norman Osborn. Despite Osborn discovering her identity and manipulating her to his own ends by impersonating Fury, she evaded capture and death. She then helped ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Maria Hill and others restore Tony Stark’s consciousness after he wiped his mind to guard knowledge from Osborn.

When Steve Rogers returned alive, Natasha joined his new team, the Secret Avengers, while working to clear her name after she had been framed in a plot targeting spies. Teaming up with Hawkeye and Mockingbird for the investigation, she discovered that the true conspirator behind it all was her presumed-dead ex-husband, Alexei Shostakov. Despite their history, Natasha defeated him in order to stop his evil plans.

Natasha continued to work hard to atone while working for the Avengers, taking paid jobs outside of the team’s missions in order to put money into trusts for families who had been affected by her past misdeeds.

When a sentient Cosmic Cube named Kobik created a Captain America loyal to Hydra (thanks to the manipulation of Red Skull), Black Widow joined the fight against her former friend, determined to not let the world fall to Hydra domination. Though others in the resistance were reluctant to kill Captain America, Natasha felt this was the only way to truly stop him and worked on her own to defeat him. She also intended to kill the fascist Cap herself to spare Spider-Man from having to do so—as it was predicted by Ulysses Cain, the Inhuman psychic, that he would.

However, her good intentions led to disastrous results. As she intervened to protect Morales, the villainous version of Captain America struck her with his shield, breaking her neck.

The Black Widow could never die so easily, though, as her friends Hawkeye and the Winter Soldier discovered. After they teamed up to investigate assassinations seemingly linked to her, they uncovered a clone of Natasha, who had been created by the Red Room in case their agents had ever fallen. This clone, true to Natasha’s nature, rebelled against her superiors and worked to bring down the Red Room.

While it’s unclear what adventures Natasha Romanoff will embark on next, one thing is certain—the strong-willed Super Hero will use her many talents and skills to bring down her enemies and protect the innocent, working hard to achieve redemption by her own standards.

Natasha & Auz:

It is difficult for most to pin down exactly when this woman was born, though her birth being slightly before 1942 is at least known.  By the 1960s, she was operating as a spy for Russia, and did so for a couple decades.  By the 1980s, she defected to SHIELD, and worked for them for a couple decades, as well.

By 2012, she was in her 70s, though still so fit she looked to be about 40.  The black operations agents of the 2nd Secret Army made sure she was one of those who made it to the giant ships in China called Leviathans; she had to be kept alive and well during the surprise global pollution clean-up operation that was about to wipe her home-country and the rest of the world clean.  After sailing aboard one of those six Leviathans for a year as the Earth’s bodies of water settled back down, she helped police New Moscow, the first of Russia’s human cities to be rebuilt by the dismantled modules of her Leviathan.

Years went by, and she remained monitored remotely by the Inisfreeans (and their founder, King Auz), unbeknownst to her.  The black operations community continued to employ and treat her well.  When the time was right, the black operations king (one of 39 chosen by the Inisfreeans before the global purge of all human civilization) in charge of New Moscow introduced the two.  Natasha felt respected by Auz from the start, and was impressed at his humble side, as well as his growing command of her native language.  She accepted his invitation to one of the only other human cities on Earth at that time, thrilled at the prospect of traveling far and wide again.

She and Carmilla Black (another assassin protected by the Inisfreeans) have since become friends, often hanging out in Inisfree; it is one of the only places on Earth where they can truly relax in secret –and out in the open.  Natasha, originally being a gifted dancer, has made a natural friend for Carmilla, who loves to go dancing at night clubs.  The two have taught each other their signature moves, and Carmilla often attends Inisfree’s Performance Hall events whenever Natasha will be dancing on stage.

Natasha maintains a luxurious residence inside one of the wings of Inisfree’s architectural copy of Russia’s Katherine Palace.  This is in Inisfree’s palaces neighborhood, arranged with ample greenbelts around the base of the miles-wide Auz-dome.  When she discusses business with the city’s founder, she often chooses to meet and share drinks with him in their city’s architectural copy of the Kremlin.  During her leisurely days, she walks hand-in-hand with Auz and Carmilla to the Soviet-themed night-club The Randy Rusky, where the three dance and make out as one.

Both she and Auz went through very rough childhoods, both were trained by their birth-countries to be killers and more, both completed hundreds of missions around the world, both defected to far-better communities, and both share a love of elegant dance.  Natasha loves to dance for Auz in private when she isn’t on stage, and invites him to her practices.  She has also volunteered to help protect him and others on his expeditions, especially when they are traveling to and studying the ancient megalithic ruins of Russia, the land she is most familiar with still.

At the latest ancient site in rebuilt Russia, she ran around like a little girl, curious and excited, Auz always bringing out great women’s girly and innocent sides.  When evening came, she sat close to him, her legs draped over his, and leaned against him as he showed her what his Inisfreean team had found.  They chatted away in Russian, English, and Inisfreean about how her people had once been part of the north-polar-region-dominating civilization called Hyperborea (its name meaning “Above the North” or “Beyond the North Wind”), and what it meant for them to learn the details of this today.  They fell asleep ‘nerding out’ like that, surrounded by maps, artifacts, and print-outs helping them link their lines to that past race and power of wondrous red-headed giants.

2022 Update:

Their new marriage is still going very strong, and they keep going on such great adventures together that they hardly even need or think of an anniversary.

She has started practicing/maintaining her skills at the Shooting Ranges, Training Tower, Halo Maps, and Batcave II‘s armory-range.  She and her husband, High King Auz, keep re-‘christening’ it –as well as their subway-cars to and from.  At some point this year, they’ll also be ‘christening’ and practicing in the PB-PK Wedge building and nearby PB-PK Carrier, her idea/invitation.
