Major Phases of Habitation:
The land that became California was once inhabited by very different peoples; the Hav-Musuvs, for example, carved out their underground city/ies in the Panamint Mountain Range near Death Valley, and Amazonian women once ruled the western edge of this state, back when it was an island separated from the mainland by the flooded Central Valley, once a sea. At some point, Atlantean refugees, possibly even Lemurian, carved out another underground city; Telos, which today remains beneath the volcano called Mount Shasta. The remains of these semi-giants can still be found across the land. Even some of their ancient cities are still barely recognizable as not natural formations, thanks in large part due to the human structures once built right on top of them having since been completely removed.
In 2013, all human civilization was erased from the face of the Earth. Even their highways and underground military installations were removed. By 2014, only one human city in the California area had started to be rebuilt; Los Angeles was getting a fresh start, now amidst the many islands and waterways that its part of the world had become. A king was chosen to rule over it, ensuring that there was uniform and good regrowth as humanity took its new hold.
2313 saw another reduction in the human presence; they had spread too much again, building hyper-polluted mega-cities covering what once were states and regions. Once all that was burned down and washed away, first by dragon swarms, and then a pole-shift, the area called California was again set aside for re-colonization by that same, now restored, king. More Details:
Ever since the Leviathans jumbled up and redistributed so many peoples and other animals, what used to be indigenous in many parts of the world completely changed. Lions became part of the local wildlife in New California, thanks to the chosen king. He raises some as semi-domesticated, often using them in place of guard dogs. There is something about this in his blood; lions have always been his spirit-animal, and the Lion Art Academy in Inisfree reflects this, honoring his contributions to the field with a lion-shaped building complete with a life-size statue of the man.
Giant ‘bearded dragons’ (pogona, such as (one of the eight races of this species) p. vitticeps), these the size of horses, are raised, trained, and ridden, still with their funny walk, much like the kaiila of Gor. These have largely replaced horses for patrol work and travel, though the horse is still in widespread use by many post-pole-shift communities. You’ll often see troops of New California riding by on these scaly, wingless-dragon-like beasts. The king of New California keeps them well-fed on a diet they enjoy; of giant grub-worms, field mice, vegetables, and even berries.
The king of New California has many ranches across his hundreds of islands, some for the lions, others for the bearded dragons, and still others for more traditional ranch-fauna, such as stallions and other breeds of horse. All his lands have healthy black soil, too, so there are crops and wild flora growing everywhere. This king’s many wives and children tend to these ranches and much of the land outside them.
Because of the much healthier lifestyle of people during this time, free from all the artificial stresses put upon them by the invaders and other dark beings of the pre-2013 times, the king of New California has grown in stature to tower over most humans. He has also gained muscular bulk and definition, now having the tone of a Greek god statue. His beard has become thicker and fuller, and is jet-black. He is expected to live as long as the first Sumerian kings; tens of thousands of Earth-years –and this will allow him to see the many trees he and his people have planted grow up to be like the adult Sequoias he has traveled out to see, some even growing as big as the World Trees; miles tall.
When his long-time friend, the king of Inisfree, comes to visit, the king of New California entertains him with hundreds of the best belly-dancers, vegan feasting, and tours of the islands he and his people have set about shaping for the civilization to come. These two kings breed and trade beautiful females often, shipfuls of them sailing back and forth between their distant realms. The finest have their forms perfected, printed as batches of clones in Inisfree, where they are taught and trained all the feminine arts, then paraded around and sometimes given as gifts during the holidays.
The underwater bases and cities of the aliens and Mer-people are all still there, right off California’s new ‘coast’. No longer having to hide, people from these neighboring communities come to the surface and ashore all the time. Some of them even trade, mingle, and explore inland, sharing their ideas, culture, and products the same way any tourists would.
Because of the pole-shift post-2313, California moved down to the latitude once occupied by the Sahara. This did not overheat what is left of its land, though; having become all islands, it is now as pleasant year-round as Hawaii. Every island, just about, has become forested, even tropical.

Overall:
Everything (land-wise) south of Canada and west of New Montana is New California. Most of it is flooded/underwater now, though, as its vast largest valley became a lake comparable to one of the Great Lakes, and the San Andreas fault-line adjusted/shook enough to cause numerous new bays, fjords, and even island clusters/chains. This largely isolated the people of this multi-state region, but also removed their desert, providing them with all the resources they might ever need.

- Powerful mer-people, such as Triton Sirena and her forces, start patrolling all throughout and around the islands of this heavily-altered land-area, the Pacific now stretching far past what was once this former-state’s coast.
- 2030s: has a (the first) land-train prototype
- goes to Spain, then Saudi Arabia because of his ancestors
- like a reverse conquistador; not from Europe to the Americas, but the other (opposite) way
- makes a new land-carrier there, like the one featured in Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
- forces a sultan, after killing that sultan’s males and enslaving his females, to sign over his land, using blood from a severed finger of one of them as the ink, addressing that sultan by a prisoner number instead of his title, Eli then having taken millions of prisoners along the way there
- then uses their riches from oil to make his ship so he can go do the RimWorld chapter of his life; off-world / new-world stuff

- makes it off-world before 2313
- ~1% of his people/descendants back in New Cali’ get to remain alive / on Earth after 2313, just like the percentage tolerated from all the other evolved 39 rebuilt nations.
- New Cali’ remains for a very long time a vast cluster of islands; the high hills and mountaintops that were once connected as original California, and is credited with receiving the vision/idea for the first generation of land-trains.
- Home to a few of the mega-cities from centuries ago, their mostly-buried, tidal wave-destroyed, and largely-submerged/sunken ruins continue to crumble into further-ruin.

- The Burning Man, though it is now vegan, nonalcoholic, drugfree, and religiously anti-queer (accepting only heterosexual males and bisexual females; the natural way)
- Most of the mountains and biggest hills pre-flooding are now islands.
