Introduction:

Captain Colbert is the highest-ranking human officer of The New Horizon spacecraft-carrier.  He is the Captain of this ship, and has attained the rank of Rear Admiral Lower Half.  Normally a Navy Captain (O-6) always commands an aircraft carrier (or its Space-faring equivalent), however this ship is exceptionally massive and supported by its own fleet.  Thus it is appropriate to address this man as either Captain or Rear Admiral Lower Half (though most are permitted to shorten that to just “Admiral”).

Life Summary:

  • 2464:  Adolf is born to a well-to-do family on their homeworld, Londinium (capital-planet of the 34 Tauri multi-star solar-system).  He is groomed for future leadership over the span of two decades by his entire family and their many influential friends.  This education and training includes intensive academic studies and extracurricular sports, making him a natural (at a high operational tempo) by the time it comes for him to attend a service academy.
  • 2486:  age 22, He graduates from his university and officer training, becoming a commissioned officer in the UAP Space Navy.  He is now Ensign (O-1) Colbert.
  • 2488:  age 24, By now, he has commanded his first small military unit, and is selected for the next Executive Officer (XO) vacancy of the parent-unit.  He has become Lieutenant Junior-grade (O-2) Colbert.
  • 2490:  age 26, Lieutenant (O-3) Colbert is promoted and given a Commanding Officer (CO) billet, managing several dozen Space-sailors for the UAP.  A few women pursue him, and he has agreeable dates with each of them, but his schedule is too demanding, so he decides to put his contract responsibilities and morals first; he chooses not to keep any of the nice ladies waiting (as a military wife left to spend most of her days waiting and wondering if her husband is alive and returning).
  • 2491:  age 27, He captains the Space-equivalent of a Navy Corvette (~85 Space-sailors).
  • 2492:  age 28, He captains the Space-equivalent of a Navy Frigate (~200 Space-sailors).
  • 2493:  age 29, Lieutenant Commander (O-4), he captains the Space-equivalent of a Navy Destroyer (~300 Space-sailors).
  • 2494:  age 30, he captains the Space-equivalent of a Navy Light cruiser (~600 Space-sailors).
  • 2495:  age 31, he captains the Space-equivalent of a Navy Heavy cruiser (~1,085 Space-sailors).
  • 2496:  age 32, Commander (O-5), he captains the Space-equivalent of a Navy Battlecruiser (~1,900 Space-sailors).  Having devoted himself fully to the military, and having waited a decade longer than most humans do to wed and start a family, he begins making time for socializing, dating, and possible marriage.
  • 2497:  age 33, he captains the Space-equivalent of a Navy Battleship (~2,800 Space-sailors).  One exceptional lady in his life, befittingly several years his junior, remains interested, presentable, and loyal, even while they are only dating.
  • 2498-2501:  age 34-37, An actual/rank Captain (O-6) now, he captains the Space-equivalent of a Navy Helicopter carrier (~3,500 Space-sailors).  He gets engaged to the worthy lady he began dating the previous year, and, over the course of these next two years, marries her and spends quality-time with her for months each time he is back planet-side on their homeworld.
  • 2502-2505:  age 38-41, He captains the Space-equivalent of a Navy Aircraft carrier (~5,000 Space-sailors).  His first child is on the way back on Londinium, and things are going well in their first/new home on that world.
  • 2506:  age 42, He is briefed on the planets in 34 Tauri which are seceding and preparing to secede, as well as possible trajectories his current duty-station (ship, in this/his case) may be tasked with, starting the blockade of all which do not return to the UAP.
  • 2507:  age 43, His efforts help start to reclaim the seceded planets.
  • 2509:  age 45, Thousands of personnel are dying on both sides of the conflict, though Captain Colbert remains objectively confident (not overly-so) due to the overwhelming numbers, resources, and technological superiority of his side.
  • 2510:  age 46, Rumor of a new type/class of Spacecraft-carrier circulates amongst the highest-ranking circles of the UAP Space Navy, as does the rumor that pre-screening and recruiting to staff one of those ultra-secretive warships is already underway.  Captain Colbert earns “his first star”; for his successful efforts during war, he is promoted to the first/lowest Admiral rank.
  • 2511:  age 47, What they called The Unification War… is over, his side having (unsurprisingly) won.  It is the most memorable homecoming of his career and life; after half a decade of war out between the worlds of his solar-system, he is confident this time he is back on Londinium that he will always be alive to return there to continue seeing his family grow.  After a few months back with his family (now a wife and two children; an older son and a younger daughter), he is invited to meet Lord Auzdein von Himmler back out in “The Black” (Space).  There, he learns that all of the battle-hardened Space-sailors (and members of other Space-faring military-branches in his solar-system) have been getting seconded out to the new Spacecraft-carrier he’d heard rumors about the previous year; it is a sort of “hush-hush” reward for those who served well… and perhaps for a little too long (due to the unusual number of combat-deployments everyone had endured during the war).
  • 2512:  age 48, Lord Himmler had been the acting-Captain of his design/creation, TNH, for its first four years of service (including four “floats”; deployments), and now he was handing over its bridge/helm to (Rear) Admiral (Lower Half) Colbert.  Admiral Colbert would captain the vessel for its 5th and many successive “floats”.
  • 2517:  age 53, Having Captained TNH for six years, he is training his XO to replace him, and is looking forward to a well-earned retirement after 31 years of service (27 outside of / after college).
  • 2518:  age 54, (Rear) Admiral (Lower Half) Colbert steps down, his XO taking charge as the new CO of TNH for the coming half-decade or more.  “Admiral A” (for Adolf) begins transitioning out of the UAP Space Navy… and to “civilian life”, to be with his family for good –which they are happy to hear.

Adolf & Auz:

These two had a formal introduction, both accompanied by his own entourage, out in the Interstellar Medium of 34 Tauri Space (territory).  Once pleasantries had been exchanged, and both sides presented the prescribed guidelines and requests to the other, it was time to travel toward 34 Tauri’s core-section; the inner planets where the vast majority of this solar-system’s civilization had occurred.  Adolf and his command staff treated Lord Himmler and the Inisfreeans accompany him/them to all Londinium’s finest, the two becoming fast-friends (though always professionally, of course).

Once working together aboard TNH, Lord Himmler stays respectfully out of Admiral Colbert’s way, trusting him entirely, and only attending the command meetings he is invited to, always functioning as an advisor/consultant there.  Likewise, Admiral Colbert trusts Lord Himmler to run his own quiet “satellite operations/patrols” from one of the hangars of TNH, rarely ever asking questions.  On more than a few occasions, both these men send a Registered Companion or two to the other as a traditional gesture between established gentlemen.

After six years of demonstrating not only exceptional officer qualities while commanding the largest Spacecraft-carrier now in the UAP Space Navy’s arsenal/fleet/s, but also a mature ongoing response to all customs Inisfreean, Admiral Colbert begins to earn answers to some of his lingering questions about the curious human-like people who’ve been co-crewing “his” ship (TNH) this whole time.  When the time is right, and always behind closed hatches (doors) in TNH’s Admirals Wing, Admiral Colbert inquires about the true nature, origin, and intentions of their kind.  Whatever he learns from Lord Himmler in there, he keeps to himself, though it doesn’t seem to shock or even phase him.

2530s Update:

Now that both he and Auz have been back with their respective families a while, they have begun a brotherly tradition of annual catching-up calls.  In the years ahead, they’ll also start having a semi-annual hangout, Memorial Day-style, at Admiral Colbert’s estate on Londinium.  The two have a lifelong respect for one another, both having inspired total confidence in the goodness of the other’s race/species (in Auz’s view, at least now that humanity has had another five centuries to grow up more than when he’d grown up amongst their ancestors back on Earth).
