These are the most refined ladies in the Universe, except of course for those born in Inisfree. Registered Companions are state-approved escorts (courtesans) who provide a range of services ranging from psychological to sexual. Some are so well-trained that they are even employed as assassins, guards, or spies, though those are usually trained and housed in separate environments. 99% of the Companions you will meet are just classy, engaging, loving ladies from nice families with exceptional educations and good standards.

Rules and Customs:

A Companion is allowed to choose his/her own clients.
It is not unusual for a Companion to choose same-sex clients as well as opposite.
The vast majority of Companions are female.
A Companion must have a yearly physical examination in order to keep his/her license.
A customer who behaves badly enough can receive a “black mark” in the Companion registry, after which no registered Companion will contract with them.
A form of tea ceremony is a part of the traditional opening to a meeting between a Companion and his/her client.
A Companion frequently provides a form of psychotherapy for his/her clients.
Trainees on border planets seem to begin their training at an older age than those on the “core” planets.
Trainees come from good families and the training houses have high academic standards.
While the Companion Guild is in many ways a working company of skilled artisans, it also would appear to be a kind of religious sect; Heads of Companion houses are called “priestesses”, and Inara’s house is called “Madrassa”, the Arabic word for school. There are heavy religious overtones to many Guild practices, such as the use of incense, a focus on contemplation, and a cloistered lifestyle.

General:

The oldest profession in the ‘Verse has one of the oldest and most respected guilds in the Core. Prostitution as it had existed on Earth-That-Was was abolished long ago, replaced by a government-approved profession officially titled ‘Companion’. The Companion’s Guild established Guild Houses throughout the 34 Tauri star system to train its members, though, due to the war, there are few Houses currently on the outer worlds.

The Guild establishes its own laws and rules. For example, Guild law states that no House may ever be run by a man. The law also states that a Companion is free to choose her clients.

Originally a female organization, the Guild has since allowed males to enter. The men undergo the same training as the women and, like the women, they can service both sexes. The majority of Companions, and all House heads, are still female.

The Houses exist to provide training to the Companions. They are academies and training grounds, nothing more. No work (between companions and their clients) is ever done inside a House.

Girls and boys as young as twelve may begin training, which includes a well-rounded education and years of physical discipline, religious study (religiously studious; not study of a religion), and the arts. Girls and boys are taught dance, martial arts, calligraphy, how to play musical instruments, and singing, among many other things. The children undergo rigorous testing on all subjects, and those who fail are sent back to their homes. They are taught the art of love play only upon successful completion of their other schooling.

Companions must pass a lengthy test in order to gain their registration. To maintain that registration, they must also pass a yearly physical evaluation conducted at a licensed hospital. There are no exceptions.

Clients must pay a subscription fee to earn a place in the client registry (meaning they pay for the right to then pay individual Companions, and this is where a large portion of the funding for the Houses comes from, while payments to individual Companions provides for that one person’s needs). The Guild and the Companion must approve of the client. If a client ever mistreats a Companion, that client will earn a black mark in the client registry, preventing him or her from ever securing such services again.

A Companion House is run much like a monastery, protecting its inhabitants and sheltering them from the outside as they undergo their training. The services a Companion performs for the client are steeped in tradition and ritual, creating a similar state and feeling of protection for each client. A Companion greets a client and bids that client farewell with ceremony, and the act of lovemaking is designed to make each client feel that he or she is special and valued –which is only one of the many reasons an evening with a Companion is so highly sought after.

Contracting with a Companion earns the client ‘an evening of pleasure’ that goes far beyond the sexual encounter. A Companion is trained to listen, to entertain, to soothe, and even to offer advice, for they are well-versed on any variety of subjects from politics to the economy. A Companion also knows traditional and contemporary dance, making them ideal dance partners even at the most formal events. They are skilled musicians, schooled in literature, and stay current with all significant newsworthy events. They have a high degree of empathy and are trained in psychology, so they can understand their client’s needs, and speak with them at length about absolutely anything, as desired. This level of connection, attentiveness, and universal compatibility is seldom found even in the most storied of spouses.

The beauty, elegance, and skills of the Companions have earned them the highest respect in social circles. There is no stigma to bringing a Companion to a party, as doing so proves you have both money and the ability to impress the Guild, whose members set very high standards. However, few Companions marry the wealthy prince and go off to live in the glittering castle. While of the social elite, Companions still exist ‘outside’ the rest of society. Though a Companion is welcomed as an escort at a party, a Companion would not be so well-received if he or she became a husband or wife. (The exception to this is in Inisfree, where they are regarded as the finest spouses possible, which is why you will find the majority of married retired Companions there.) A Companion might commit to an exclusive, long-term contract, but that would still be a business arrangement, not a marriage.

A Companion is encouraged to enjoy the work, but is taught to stay emotionally detached from the clientele. They are largely empathic, and very graceful at responding to emotional states, but do not let their emotions get the best of them. Companions will appear emotional in positive ways, always at the right times, and keep that in check based on their interpretation of their clients’ body language and other cues.

Most Companions work on the Core planets (the wealthier, stable, more developed worlds closer to the center of the 34 Tauri star system), entertaining clients in their own suites or meeting them elsewhere. Some choose to travel and may contract with a luxury liner —often involving servicing clients on a cruise or flying the ship’s shuttles to visit clients on nearby worlds. Few Companions choose to travel on their own or ally themselves with a small ship, and even fewer visit the outer worlds (which is why Inara Serra became so legendary). Those who travel off the beaten path can pick and choose their clients even more so than the rest of their special kind, though they may not make as much money as when working on the rich Core-worlds.

Formerly entitled “Master Females” by the 4th Reich’s FOB-city based Academies (the schools of Inisfree), these engineered and life-long schooled young ladies have since expanded the showcasing of their goddessine talents and tradecraft throughout the colonized Verse, starting some of their own academies, now called Companion Training Houses (or Guild Houses), and more recently referring to themselves as Registered Companions, in stark contrast to the common though genuinely-competitive unregistered whores.

Teams of these highly trained ladies, more commonly referred to as just “Companions” by those who know them, also now often deploy as official members of the crew of larger warships of both the Union of Allied Planets, as well as the forces of the 4th Reich’s FOB-based empire. A prime example of this is with the Spacecraft carrier called The New Horizon; dozens of Registered Companions are part of its official and highly respected crew. They are counted as core personnel, instrumental in the proper optimal functioning of the whole, thus key to mission success.

In human-colonized Space, there are millions of these Registered Companions, though compared to the rest of humanity their numbers are extremely rare, as few have what it takes to commit to the years of study, exercise, and certifications required to become them, and the meticulous annual exams to remain amongst their ultra elite ranks. There are usually one or two Companions for every 10,000 regular people in any given colony or other area of Space. This ratio is greater on struggling worlds; fewer Companions, if any at all, and fewer on more-established worlds; far more Companions available at all times.

To the Companions, it is merely another logical part of the proper holistic treatment of a worthy patient, as well as a universal biological aspect of being. Classy Companions vs. Common Whores:

To be clear, there are many distinct levels in the promiscuity profession;

A slut is any female who enjoys casual sex with multiple partners.
A whore is any female who does that in hopes of getting paid, but not as a living.
A prostitute is any female who does this for a living, rarely putting out unless money is provided upfront. (There are at least 10 classes or castes of this in China, for example, with the lowest level exchanging bare-bones sex (unskilled) for a dollar or a bowl of soup.)
A geisha is a Japanese hostess trained to entertain men with conversation, dance, and song, and is sometimes available for sex.
An escort is a classier kind of prostitute who typically gets paid more and sometimes just hangs out with the client, occasionally providing ‘the girlfriend experience’.
A courtesan is an escort for the wealthy elite; the ‘upper crust’ of society.
A concubine is a woman who lives with a man but has lower status than his wife or wives.
A warrior-geisha is a geisha also trained as a bodyguard.
A mistress is a female in charge of other women, such as a kajira who also trains other kajirae.
A wife is a female who gives long-term sex (for years) and support in exchange for money and shelter.
A top-wife is a favorite wife; these are the wives who have the best looks, but also are sometimes chosen based on training or tenure.
A Registered Companion is a female who can perform any of those previous roles, and who is both legally approved of by the state or states in which she provides those business services, as well as regularly screened for and cured of STDs (part of why most states approve of this profession, but not any of the previous and less-skilled roles); she may not specialize in protection (as a bodyguard; warrior-geisha does), but she is the most well-rounded and versatile of all these groups.
The only thing above a Registered Companion is an Inisfreean Master Female, who can perform any of the previous roles, and is a complete master of them all, not just talented and practiced in each.

Registered Companions are not whores or sluts, and are some of the classiest people you will ever meet –if you are so fortunate. Regard them this way, and it will pay great and endless dividends. They are most certainly worth your time and deep appreciation, pun not intended.
