Details:

Karolina Dean (/ˌkærəˈlnə/ karr-ə-LEE-nə), also briefly known as Lucy in the Sky,[1] or L.S.D.,[2] is a fictional character, a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in the series Runaways. Like every member of the original Runaways, she is the daughter of evil super-powered criminals; while searching through her parents’ home, Karolina inadvertently discovers that her parents were Majesdanian invaders. Majesdanians are an alien race that absorbs solar energy and re-radiates it in the form of the colors of the rainbow. She is often called “Kar,” “Karo,” or “K” for short, and is known for her free spirit and kind nature.

Karolina is the only extraterrestrial in the group, except for a period of time when her Skrull fiancée, Xavin, becomes part of the team.[3] Runaways creator Brian K. Vaughan played a significant role in the character’s subsequent development as well as artist/writer Adrian Alphona, both of whom spent most of the first volume of the series hinting that Karolina was romantically attracted to fellow member Nico Minoru. By Runaways’ fourth relaunch, Karolina’s storyline picks up with her relationship with Lightspeed of Power Pack referenced in Avengers Academy.

Karolina Dean is portrayed by Virginia Gardner in the Hulu television series Runaways which is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This version of the character is half human and half Gibborim.

Biography

The Pride

Karolina is the daughter of renowned Hollywood actors Frank and Leslie Dean and is the only older Runaway who didn’t witness their parents murder an innocent girl as a sacrifice. Karolina denies the entire situation primarily, but finally believes the group soon after discovering she is an alien.[4] The kids decide to go for a massive ransack, and leave home; before leaving for good, they decide to put their parents to justice by collecting certain evidence from their homes. When arriving at the Dean mansion, they find Karolina’s parent’s last will and testament; Karolina is given a piece of paper with the circular “no symbol” covering the Caduceus. Alex convinces her to remove her medic alert bracelet because it is emblazoned with the symbol. Karolina angrily concedes, thinking that she only wears the bracelet because she’s allergic to penicillin, and her skin immediately glows with a fluid, rainbow-like light.[5] Remembering something they heard from the Pride’s sacrifice, the group assumes Karolina is an alien and the bracelet is an anchor to hide her powers; Leslie Dean later confirms these theories for Karolina.[6] After escaping their parents, Karolina takes the name Lucy in the Sky, a reference to the song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds“.[6]

Personality

Early in the series, Karolina constantly struggled with her alien heritage, feeling that she is a “freak” amongst the group, the only one who needs to actively hide her true form.[5] Another insecurity was of her speculated homosexuality. Her insecurities even prompt Karolina to offer her life to the vampire Topher, as Karolina expresses little desire to live.[7] After her first near-death experience at the hands of Alex Wilder, Karolina overcomes her death wish and helps the Runaways escape the rampaging Gibborim as the Pride fight their former benefactors.[8] After the Pride’s defeat, Karolina is sent to live with foster parents, but she organizes a secret reunion for the Runaways, after which they run away again, this time to the Pride’s old lair beneath the La Brea Tar Pits.[8] Karolina is portrayed as having a wide, free spirit, notably when she discovers she can fly. But she is also shown as being quite sensitive, often crying at her pain and misfortune, as well as the pain and misfortune of others.

As a fugitive

Karolina’s twisted dream.

In the early issues of Runaways, volume 2, Karolina fights under the command of de facto leader Nico. Karolina expresses more comfort with being an extraterrestrial[9] and makes strong hints at being a lesbian, especially as she stops to compliment Julie Power on her beauty during a battle with Excelsior over the custody of Victor Mancha[10] and later even agrees to go on a date with her following a joint Avengers Academy/Runaways mission[11] (and would eventually become romantically involved).[12] Soon after Victor joins the team, Karolina “comes out” to Nico with an attempted kiss, which Nico rejects outright.[13] Karolina’s “outcast” insecurities resurface when her Skrull fiancée Xavin comes to Earth in search for her. Unbeknownst to her, Karolina’s parents arranged Xavin’s and Karolina’s marriage as part of a peace-weaving effort between the Skrull and Majesdanian (her species) homeworlds.[14] Karolina leaves with Xavin, much to Nico’s distress.[14]

While on her home planet Majesdane, Karolina learns to control the shift between her Majesdanian and humanoid forms and how to further control her solar powers.[15] However, the wedding does not go as planned and the couple flees towards Earth as their homeworlds reignite the old war. They crash land near the Hostel and return in time to assist in the rescue of Molly Hayes.[16] Karolina has a dream of her parents tearing her apart. Karolina remains with the team and Xavin becomes accepted as a member after Gertrude Yorkes‘ death, and they both join the Runaways in defeating the Gibborim for good.[13] When the Runaways are accidentally displaced in 1907, Karolina meets Klara Prast, and convinces everyone to accept her on the team.[17]

Deportation and other activities

In S.W.O.R.D. #2, Karolina is one of the aliens kidnapped by Henry Gyrich in his “aliens go home” policy.[18] He uses pheromones to target Karolina’s Majesdanian physiology and leads her away from the Runaways and kidnaps her without difficulty.[18] She was eventually freed along with the other aliens. She assists in saving the Earth from a fleet of murder-happy aliens. Abigail Brand, now the sole head of S.W.O.R.D., returns all the aliens to Earth, reassuring them they will have their freedom and they are each owed one favor.[19] In Avengers Arena, Karolina and Molly sought out Hank Pym for help when Nico and Chase go missing. Karolina dismissed Molly’s concerns that somebody took their friends instead she believed they ran off to be together.[20] Karolina later appears in the pages of Avengers Undercover where she and Molly visit Nico and Chase in the S.H.I.E.L.D. detention center after Hazmat allegedly killed Arcade.[21] Karolina entered a relationship with Julie Power of Power Pack.

Reunion

After the Runaways disbanded for some time, Karolina has moved on to a happy new life in college and left behind her anxieties over her old life with the help of therapy; thus, declined the invitation to reunite even with the return of undead Gert. Karolina reasoned she had grown up and changed from their time as scared kids on the run. She also felt it didn’t make sense for them to get back together because they were never a team, like the Avengers, or had a mission, other than staying alive and not becoming their parents. Nico agreed with Karolina’s assessment, but it still left her riddled with guilt.[22] Karolina dropped by Nico’s apartment to reconsider the reunion when Nico attempted to kiss Karolina but is rejected due to having a girlfriend and dismissed it as Nico’s habit of seeking comfort at times of stress.[23] The Runaways banded together to rescue Gert and Molly from Molly’s mad scientist grandmother’s house. Karolina avoided hurting Molly’s grandmother and her genetically engineered creations; however, once Nico was struck by a telepathic attack, Karolina blasted the house and put an end to it. Battered but finding solace together as a makeshift family, they all decided to go home.[24]

The Runaways resettled into their old hideout, the Hostel. Karolina is fitting in like she never left like her friendship with Nico hasn’t missed a beat, but she struggles to give equal attention to her classes and girlfriend.[25] When Julie’s eagerly awaited visit is interrupted by Dr. Doom’s attack on the hostel, Karolina and Julie don’t see eye-to-eye on how Runaways improvise-styled battle plan and their functionality as a super-hero family team works.[26] Julie expressed frustration of Karolina not opening up in their relationship, especially about her past that’s now her present. To drown her sorrows in sugar over Karolina ignoring her once again, Julie unknowingly ate an enchanted cupcake that transformed her back to a thirteen year old forever. [27] The Runaways eventually reverse the spell, but Julie still broke up with Karolina as she felt Karolina placed her membership in the Runaways on a higher priority.[28] While Nico and Karolina bonded over lost loves, Karolina admitted she had been neglecting Julie which, perhaps, made their breakup inevitable.[29] Following the break-up, Karolina invited Nico to attend her parents’ legitimate children’s charity ball with her. While there, Nico confessed her feelings asking Karolina for a second chance.[30] Karolina was surprised and scared.[30][31] After some hesitation that left Karolina feeling rejected again, Nico finally seized her chance and the two kissed, beginning a relationship.[30][31]

Relationships

Karolina gets along well with the other Runaways, and the only time she had ever got into an argument with them was after they questioned her about Xavin’s gender.[32] She has an older-sister type relationship with Molly, but a caring relationship with both Chase and Victor, whom she had both comforted after they lost loved ones.[33]

Nico Minoru

It was subtly hinted throughout the first volume of Runaways that Karolina had harbored a longtime crush on Nico. Much later, Karolina attempted to kiss Nico, but was rejected. Karolina then came out to Nico as a lesbian, admitting her feelings for Nico.[13] After deciding to leave Earth to marry Xavin, Karolina left her medical alert bracelet with Nico as a token of remembrance. When Karolina later returned to Earth, she accidentally confessed to Xavin (who had taken on the form of Nico) that she was still in love with Nico. Despite this, Karolina remained staunch in her devotion to Xavin, and thus her feelings for and attraction to Nico occasionally put a strain on their friendship.[17]

When the Runaways re-banded some time later, Nico made possible romantic overtures towards Karolina, ultimately attempting to kiss her. However, Karolina rejected Nico out of faithfulness to Julie and dismissed it as Nico’s habit of seeking comfort in times of stress.[23]Following Julie and Karolina’s break-up, Karolina invited Nico to attend her parents’ legitimate foundation’s a charity ball with her. While there, Karolina’s usual nervousness was replaced by newfound confidence because of Nico’s support as she’s felt Nico had “always seen the real” her.[30] Nico confessed she was confused about herself for so long she couldn’t see her clearly. Nico knows who and what she wants now and asks Karolina for a second chance.[30] Karolina was surprised and scared, which exacerbated her old feelings of rejection when Nico pulled away.[31] But Nico seized her chance and the two kissed, beginning a relationship.[30]

Xavin

Xavin came to Earth to marry Karolina, revealing that their parents had arranged a marriage between the two of them in order to keep Earth safe from Skrull attacks. Karolina initially rejected Xavin; Xavin attempted to persuade her, explaining that the marriage would be part of a peace treaty. Karolina still refused, stating that it would be a “lie” for her to marry a man. Xavin then revealed that Skrulls had the ability to shapeshift into different sexes, prompting Karolina to decide to accept the marriage proposal.[14] However, they were later unable to get married when war broke out again between the Skrulls and Majesdanians. They escaped to Earth and re-joined the Runaways.[34] Throughout their relationship, Karolina apparently fully accepted Xavin’s continued changing between male and female appearances. However, she secretly expressed confusion and doubts over Xavin’s true gender. However, during an argument, Xavin subconsciously reverted to female human form, which pleased Karolina.[17]Their relationship ended when Xavin left Earth with a remaining group of Majesdanians, sacrificing themselves for Karolina.[35]

Julie Power

Karolina flirted with and later began dating Julie Power, after a trip to Avengers Academy; this resulted in long-term relationship. Julie attempted to convince Karolina to move to New York so they could be together full-time after the past year apart, though Karolina was resistant to this.[25] After visiting Karolina in Los Angeles, Julie broke up with her, believing that she and Karolina were too incompatible and that Karolina’s first priority would always be to the Runaways.[26]

Powers and abilities

Like all Majesdanians, Karolina’s natural form is luminous, iridescent, and visually fluid, often depicted with waves of rainbow-like light floating off her body (Chase described her as “a burning painting”) though body structure is essentially humanoid.[5] Originally, Karolina required a custom made medic alert bracelet constructed of an unspecified alien metal to revert to humanoid form. However, after spending many months on Majesdane, Karolina learned to control the change and can make it at will.[15]In her Majesdanian form, Karolina is able to manipulate solar energy absorbed by her body to generate large concussive blasts, fine laser-like beams and force fields capable of stopping cave-ins, gunfire and explosions. Like her parents, Karolina learned the ability to bind people, binding a New Pride in a colorful sphere. Karolina’s Majesdanian form also grants her the ability to fly. During an encounter with the vampire Topher, it is revealed that Karolina’s blood also harbors solar energy-based properties, because drinking her blood caused Topher to combust.

The drawback to Karolina’s powers is that they have a finite charge. If she is in her Majesdanian form too long or exerts her powers too much, her glow will start to fade and revert her to human form until she uses the sun’s rays to recharge. The only time she entirely lost her powers was when the Runaways battled the Gibborim to prevent Chase from sacrificing himself.[32] Leslie Dean stated early in the series that Majesdanians’ abilities do not affect one another.[8]

Karolina Dean was raised by her parents Frank and Leslie Dean,[9]two actors from TV’s General Hospital,[10] in Hollywood, California. Unbeknownst to Karolina, Frank and Leslie were aliens exiled from their home planet of Majesdane for criminal activities.[2] Karolina’s true nature was suppressed by a specialized medical alert bracelet which is made of a special metal that dampens her energy points.[6][3] Additionally, the Deans were members of The Pride, a secret cabal involved in criminal and occult activities.[9] Despite growing up with two famous parents, Karolina was untouched by Hollywood scandal and developed a compassionate nature and strong moral compass.[9][1]

Karolina discovers her alien nature

When Karolina and the other children of the Pride witnessed their parents’ murdering a girl as part of a ritual sacrifice, they ran away from home, determined to defy their evil legacy. Karolina discovered her Alien heritage, which gave her the ability to fly and manipulate solar energy, powers that were inhibited for most of her life by a Medical alert jewelry bracelet forged from an alien metal. The Deans, wishing to give their daughter a normal life, told her she has a deadly allergy and instructed her to never take the bracelet off. After learning the truth, Karolina was ashamed of her alien heritage and didn’t put much value in her life. She offered to sacrifice herself to save her friends when they were attacked by a vampire. The vampire was killed when he drank her blood, due to the solar energy stored in her blood.

After their parents’ destruction, Karolina’s friends were split up by California Social Services. Karolina Dean was sent to a foster family that was addicted to prescription painkillers, and she was forced to see a psychologist. Missing her friends, Karolina organized a reunion, asking the team to meet her at the James Dean memorial where they had decided to run away the first time. The teenagers escaped their new homes to regroup and fight the supervillains that have filled the void in Los Angeles left by their parents’ departure.

Karolina feeling conflicted about her Majesdanians heritage and her life on Earth

Karolina was plagued by insecurities about her status as an extraterrestrial, and keeping the fact that she’s a lesbian secret, although she has become more well-adjusted and open about her alien heritage.[citation needed]

Karolina misread some signs and unsuccessfully tried to kiss her friend Nico. Her love life became more complicated with the arrival of Super-Skrull-in-training Prince Xavin, her fiancée through an arranged marriage.[11] After fighting Karolina’s friends, Xavin told her that they wouldn’t force her to marry them, but they had hoped that their marriage might end the war between the Skrulls and the Majesdanians. Karolina revealed that she is not attracted to men and doesn’t want to live a lie, so Xavin altered their form to that of a human woman and persuaded her to leave with them. Karolina returned to her parents’ home planet with Xavin, hoping to stop the war, which was triggered by her parents. She gave her medical alert bracelet to Nico as a gift and remained in contact with her friends via voice transmissions.[2]

Though Karolina and Xavin grew close, Karolina continued to miss her friends. Karolina and Xavin prepared for their wedding,[12] but unfortunately during the ceremony a Skrullos guest insulted a Majesdanian bridesmaid’s dresses leading to more fighting.[3]

Julie Power (Earth-616) and Karolina Dean (Earth-616) 001

Julie Power and Karolina Dean dating

After the conflict escalated, Karolina and Xavin returned to Earth.[3] Once the wedding and talks of peace failed, a Skrull Battleship launched to thermonutron missiles at Majesdane destroying it.[13] To avenge Majesdane, the remaining members of the Light Brigade, Majesdane elite military force, traveled to Earth to force Karolina Dean to stand trial in place of her parents. To save Karolina, and hopefully finally end the Skrullos-Majesdanian conflict, Xavin disguised themselves as Karolina and left Earth with the Light Brigade.[14]

Karolina was among the numerous extraterrestrials abducted Henry Gyrich‘s mandate to S.W.O.R.D..[15] She was brief held in custody of S.W.O.R.D. abroad the Peak.[16]

When Chase started to sense that Old Lace was still alive, the Runaways followed the trail straight to the Avengers Academy campus. When Justin Seyfert detected the Ultron tech within Victor, the Runaways were attacked. The fighting ceased and they made an effort to recover Old Lace. Much to the Runaways’ joy, they found Old Lace alive and well. They then came into conflict with the Academy again as their plans to force Klara and Molly to stay were revealed.[17] They soon stopped fighting again, and Nico used a spell to share their memories. This lead to a mutual understanding and their differences were peacefully resolved. Karolina made plans to go on a date with Julie Power.[18]

Karolina and Nico kissing

Karolina and Julie continued to date, and things have progressed well between them.[19][20][21] When Nico and Chase disappeared with little notice,[22] Karolina took over the leadership role of the Runaways and was unalarmed by their departure, unlike Molly.[20] Eventually, the team disbanded. Karolina enrolled in Pomona College to live an ordinary and happy civilian life. She also started seeing a therapist to cope with her traumatic life experiences.

When Gert Yorkes returned to life, she rallied Nico and Chase to reform the Runaways. When they visited Karolina, she initially declined the offer.[23] Karolina eventually gave the offer a second thought and returned to the team in time to help them save Molly from her mad scientist grandmother.[24] Karolina moved to The Hostel’s main building with the rest of the Runaways, but continued attending college.[8] During this time, Julie broke up with Karolina since she felt she was inattentive.[25] Not long afterwards, Nico decided to act on her feelings for Karolina, and they started dating.[26]

Powers

Because of her Majesdanian physiology, Karolina has powers common to others of her species including:

Karolina Dean (Earth-616) S.W.O.R.D. target 001

Karolina Dean’s profile when she was being targeted by S.W.O.R.D.

  • Solar Energy Manipulation: She is able to absorb solar radiation and convert it into a unique energy type which she can manipulate for various uses. Karolina’s powers are stronger related to her exposure to sunlight.[27][28] It is possible this is absorption of some sort of cosmic energy.[29] She is able to store the solar energy in every cell of her body, even her blood.[30]
    • Bioluminescent: In her natural state, Karolina’s skin and hair are luminescent with a shimmering, rainbow-colored light of solar radiation. Originally, Karolina was unable to control this vibrant appearance and required her medical alert bracelet to suppress this ability.[31] With practice, Karolina was able to appear human without her bracelet,[32] but still employs the use of her bracelet at times.[23]
    • Light Energy Blasts: Karolina can also project the solar energy in a beam of variable intensity and diameter, from a wide concussive blast to a thin laser-like cutting beam.[6]
    • Force Fields: She can control the projected energy to a limited degree forming defensive/protective shields/barriers.[33][3][29]
    • Heat Resistance: Karolina can both withstand extremely high temperatures[2] and emit warmth.[34]
  • Flight: Karolina is able to propel herself into the air leaving a rainbow-like trail behind. The upper limits of her speed have yet to be determined. She is also able to carry others while flying.[27][29]

Weaknesses

  • Solar Energy Dependent: Excessive use of her powers drains her stored solar energy reserves. In daylight, the depletion is negligible given that she is constantly replacing the used energy. At night, it is possible for her to completely use up her stored energy and not have access to any special abilities until she is again exposed to sunlight.[27][28]
  • Power Suppression: Her powers can also be suppressed via contact with some specific metallic materials.[35][36][3]

Equipment

Transportation

  • Leapfrog (formerly)
  • Karolina’s Car: Prior to running away from their parents, Karolina possessed a car.[37]
Karolina Dean (Earth-616) Nico Minoru (Earth-616) Runaways Vol 2 7

Karolina tries to kiss Nico

  • Karolina is a lesbian.[2][17]
    • She had developed romantic feelings for Nico Minoru early on[9][38][39] though she was rebuffed when she tried to act on these feelings.[11] However, Nico and Karolina were able to resolve this misunderstanding and remain very close friends. After breaking up with Julie, Nico eventually confessed her feelings to her, having finally accepted them, and the two got together.[26]
    • When she learned she was betrothed to Xavin, she openly admitted that she likes girls. To accommodate her, Xavin, a shape-shifting Skrull, was able to transform into a female form.[2][40]
    • She showed some interest in Lightspeed when the Runaways met Excelsior.[41] Later the two began to date and were in a relationship.[18][19][20][23][24]
    • Although she is a lesbian, she had flirted with Topher[38] and Chase.[42]
  • Karolina is vegan.[9]
  • Karolina is betrothed to Xavin,[11] but their wedding was interrupted by an escalation in the MajesdanianSkrullos conflict.[12][3]
  • She was stated to be a half-breed by the Skrulls.[43]

Karolina & Auz:

Auz discovered Nico (Karolina’s lifelong crush) when he spotted Karolina during his 2017 expedition to NYC. He didn’t meet Karolina for another few years, though. Only after did he decide to meet Nico, too.

The two girls share an apartment in Inisfree; they are finally together.  They didn’t want to live in a mansion or other big place in Inisfree; they’d grown up with that, and the houses always felt too big and empty.  They also wanted to keep “discovering themselves”; they didn’t want to be distracted by managing the staff needed to maintain any large residence, instead keeping their time and minds free to dabble, sample, and figure out what they really want their homes and lives to be like/about.

Karolina and Auz make love almost constantly when they are together, and she loves how he loves how she glows for him, making all his memories of visions and fantasies about seeing hot chicks start to glow when he made love to them… feel better now. (Back then; before Karolina, he’d only just pictured such events, always wanting them, never thinking them possible. Now… he realizes they are part of his ancestral/blood-memory… and that glowing hotties such as her really do exist. He sees that they are, like the Vanir and Pleiadians, literal children of the living star-gates, and that their increasing presence in his life as fuck-buddies and lovers is the best and surest sign of all that he is on the right path, in line with his calling; to reunite the ever-compatible on all levels, just as they originally existed before the invasions and corruption that soured the three main realms, temporarily driving them into hiding apart.)

She used to feel worried that her relationship with the King might make Nico feel jealous or betrayed, but that was before she witnessed the power and dominance of his calming and compatibility-rendering effect/presence. Now, she feels right as rain when she is with him, knowing things will only get better and more loving between the three of them as time goes on. Karolina has every confidence in him and that.

As she and Auz continue to fuck, her powers are growing almost exponentially.

In the future (once the Inisfreeans chart all of known Space; in/after the 2200s), they’ll invite Karolina to travel with them aboard one of their IC-WSs to her (people’s) homeworld. Disguised/appearing as a dwarf-star, it took them a bit longer to realize what it was and scout/scan it, but they inevitably did. Now… it’s her turn to go.

2022 Update:

Now well into their 2nd year of marriage, Karolina and Auz are an extremely happy and playful couple.  They have ‘christened’ every room in her Inisfree apartment, including its balcony, plus many of the adjacent apartments and the rooftop of its whole building.  The two also make regular love out on the Slope Clearing and throughout the city’s meadows.

This Summer, she’ll suggest to her husband that they make love atop every mountain range in Inisfree, as well as in the observation rooms inside the heads of the three Trumpeter Mechs –which he will, of course, be very excited about, agreeing to instantly, taking the sides of her jaw in his hands and kissing his thanks to her lips over and over again.  They’ll also start going on threesome movie dates to the Drive-in Theater.  Sometimes their ‘third party’ will be her girlfriend-wife, Nico, and sometimes it will be other shorty hotties, such as Jessamine, another of his/their favorite little blondes.  Heather Cameron will start joining them soon, too.

2023 Update:

In keeping with the prudent tradition/law and trajectory/development of Inisfree and those allied with us, Karolina, being the sexiest known female of Majesdane, is now the secret and eternal queen of that world and race.
